It's hit the online news recently. CD's distributed by Sony contain a "rootkit", that is, a malevolous software that cannot be detected and/or uninstalled by conventional means. (Think of it as "The virus of viruses"). Trying to uninstall it renders your PC useless.

This rootkit hides all files in your computer that start with the word "$sys$". Sony's anti-copying programs use this so you can't remove them, but viruses can use that trick too. Already two viruses have been found on the web which exploit the rootkit to be invisible to virus scanners.

So please DON'T PLAY SONY CD'S on your computer!

Hehe, Swedish IT media site idg.se calls it a trojan and accourding to them, use the program PestPatrol to delete it.

Funny how Sony goes to extreme measures to seize piracy.

Well, maybe they wanna get they point clear, I guess.I doubt Sony would let off a virus for even three days without getting rid of it.....

My computer's crap anyways, I could use a good excuse for the warranty.
