Eh. I'm certainly no Krisis/Peachy or Chance when it comes to writing poems but my girlfriend's recently-written poem inspired me to try writing again. This is the POS I came up with after having recently watched "Finding Neverland" and "Donnie Darko" again (hence the reference of the title). The "man" at the beginning was actually me and I never really stopped to think about this until last night.

    ---------------

I saw a man drop a penny in the store the other day
He just looked at it and shook his head
"It's just a penny" he tells himself before walking away
And I just stand there, staring at it as the light glistens in
From a window that makes the copper shine in just the right way

Something about the way sunlight reflects upon some surfaces
The fragmented colors splayed over floors from stained-glass
A flickering and phasing of a Nordmann fir covered in tinsel
Just as the sun rises over the hills of white and hits in from the window
At just the right angle that makes it look almost ephemeral in our world
Like from some kind of dream world that Munin and Hugin picked up
When Odin had them peeking over J. M. Barrie's busy shoulder one night

But when the sun falls and his sister takes to the sky
She provides the subtle luminescence that reveals to us
An entirely different canvas that her brother conceals
With an overzealous light that shines bright
Blotting out the shimmering imperfections of the velvet blanket
That encases the world around us

But even in the moonlight that penny still shines
No matter what light, when it hits it just right
You can see the worth that surpasses the currency
    It was meant to represent
And touch down on a more heartfelt level
Like having your own cellar door in your pocket
That reminds you that whether it is night or day
The penny still shines just so long as left in the care
    Of someone who appreciates it
