John, as I was reading the Tomita interview, I felt a urge to ask an old
question, but I didn't have anone to ask about.

I know that the Holst family sued Tomita for "allegedly manhandling"
    Planets. How this turned out?

Right when I first heard Tomita's version, I was disturbed by the lack of
Uranus in almost its entirety and by the replacing of half of Jupiter
with sound effects. There was available time in the LP to record the
missing parts if Tomita wanted to do so.

Overall, Tomita's work is undoubtedly a historical music masterpiece and
one of my all-time favorite records, but why he decided not to follow the
    original more closely?

I am aware that Uranus would be an extremely difficult and challenging
piece to arrange. Would this have any relationship with Tomita's decision
not to record it? Was it the origin of the the legal complaint by the
    Holsts?

    m.a.v.

I havn't read anything on the suit, but I do agree about the sound effects
being a noisy track for Jupiter.

The same question goes out to the mailing list, any info out there on the
    suit?

I have the LP and I have the score. I'm a musician, so I could arrange it
myself if I had the time.

A synthesist named Patrick Gleeson did for an album called "Beyond the
Sun" at the same time as Tomita did his. Gleeson's contains the full
score, but its out of print, which might say something. His version was
very true to the original but many have called it stiff.

    By the way...

I asked Tomita this question in person. Not the part of the lawsuit.
That was the RCA UK lawyers and the Holst Estate's business, not mine or
    Mr. Tomita's.

He repeated whats pretty much already known on the subject. The musical
material in, for example Uranus didn't lend itself to good synth
orchestration, so he shortened it. The opposite for say Jupiter
