I think they can be either one. In a game I have that has elves in it, there are both tall and short elves. My opinion is that they should have both tall and short. I think it's better :D.

Isn't there some debate as to whether you're talking of Oberon's elves (which note that they are taller and more graceful) or "Santa's Elves" (which are short)?

It'd depend on context of the story, and where it came from, I think.

First i think this should be moved to debate... And it depends on what kind of lore we are speaking of. In European Lore elves are part human breads blessed with powers. Mostly found in celtic legends as Liazons for the gods of nature they are tall and are very wise. In other areas of the world they are seen as short funny little creatures (Elvin magic making cookies!!!!). It all depends, since they are all things of lore and myths not real creatures... so its all relative.

Now that I think about, it should be moved to debate. Anyway, my opinion is the same as before. If elves were only tall or short, it would get a bit boring after a while. It would be more interesting if their were tall and short, at least on my opinion.

It might be different species of elves. I believe elves are usually tall. Faes are tall. Fairies, gnomes, and dwarfs are short-like. I think.
-ashika- If you TV is missing, go by a pack of Ticonderoga's.

I've always thought of elves as being tall and slender, myself. Santa's elves are really dwarves in disguise. ;)

What about D&D Elves? They're not necessarily tall, per se, but they're not as short as Dwarves/Gnomes. I believe about four and a half feet or so.

all the myths say they're short, but the novels and games depict them as tall, im not really too bothered.
I'm sticking with myths and saying they're short.

I'd say they're pretty human-sized. I mean, most of them aren't Ogres but then again, they aren't Dwarfs. ;)

I think that the stories you are refering to, use the term elf as the same thing as a gnome.

The elves from EQ2 are skinny and cute while the Night Elves from WoW are friggin' huge. I'm not sure =/ Little shoe-maker elves are small. Maybe it depends on what type of elf!

i've always been of the opinion that, since they're fantasy characters, do them however you imagine. there is no real set way. it's just imagination and if someone comes down on you for "doing it wrong" just laugh at them. as long as it works in your world, that's all that matters. =p
