Your Top 10 Favourite Books and/or Authors

I was reading the 'Last Book You Read' thread. (Hey that rhymes.) Anyway I saw some books that I've read and would like to read, and I thought it would be great if there was a thread where we could see suggestions for new books and authors to check out, instead of reading the same authors all the time.

Here's My top ten list of books:

1. Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A. Heinlein
2. Green Grass, Running Water- Thomas King (From where my moniker hails).
3. Lord of the Rings trilogy- J. R. R. Tolkien
4. Slaughterhouse Five- Kurt Vonnegut
5. Brave New World- Aldous Huxley
6. 1984- George Orwell
7. The Dark Tower series- Stephen King
8. Job: A Comedy Of Justice - Robert A. Heinlein
9. Galapagos- Kurt Vonnegut
10. The Stand- Stephen King
My Favorite Authors are:
• Robert A. Heinlein
• Stephen King
• Thomas King
• Mercedes Lackey
• Michael Crichton
• Jessica Marcotte (a.k.a. MT [a.k.a. MK] nepotism is fun)
• George Orwell
• Gordan Korman (Edited one)
• J. K. Rowling
• J. R. R. Tolkien

If you can't think of ten, I'll fill in the rest with made up names (like into the wind by I. P. Freely) :p.
I especially recommend Stranger in a Strange Land, it's the best book I've ever grokked. (Inside joke for those who have read it.)

Edit: Okay, okay, I'll switch Gordon Korman for :p clancy

Old_Coyote, I like your attitude.

I'll start with the authors:
1. Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Life The Universe and Everything, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency)
2. William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, The Merchant of Venice)
3. Robert Louis Stevenson (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Treasure Island)
4. William Gibson (Neuromancer, Idoru)
5. Dante Alighieri (Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso [aka The Divine Comedy])
6. Lloyd Alexander (The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Arcadians)
7. Gordon Korman (The Bruno & Boots series)
8. Jack Vance (a bunch of stuff I can't remember the title to, but all very good ... a lot of novelas)
9. Timothy Zahn (Heir to the Empire Trilogy, just about the best Star Wars novels)
10. Alexandre Dumas (The Three Musketteers, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Man in the Iron Mask)

Now, the books:
1. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
2. Idoru - William Gibson
3. Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
4. The Inferno - Dante Alighieri (very hard to read, to warn you)
5. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams
6. Treasure Island - Robert Louis Stevenson
7. Animal Farm - George Orwell
8. To Kill A Mockingbird - embarrassingly enough, I can't recall the author
9. Life, The Universe And Everything - Douglas Adams
10. The Black Cauldron - Lloyd Alexander (I read this book for the first time in grade 8, and it's still left an impression on me. It's really good, in spite of the filth that Disney turned it into)

7. Mercedes Lackey
8. William Shakespeare
9. L. Frank Baum
10. Anne McCaffrey
As for books...Whew. This is tougher. I want to read the Hitch Hikers through the Galaxy and a lot of the other books listed here- but I never got a chance to. Well, I'll try. In no particular order:
• Lord of the Flies

I recommend reading it as the Trilogy of Four (the first four books) skip Mostly Harmless (the last one) because it's REALLY bad.

A great book I think the author was Harper Lee
I always wanted to read the hitchhiker books. I heard good things about clockwork orange too. I want to read Farenheit 451 too.

I read the Inferno novus isn't kidding about it being a hard book. I barely got through it:dizzy2:. Lord of the flies was great as well.

And MT is my sister so we read a lot of the same books.

Harper Lee sounds right. I honestly can't believe I didn't know that ... I'm the worst bookworm ever.
As for the Inferno, who's translation did you read? I read HW Longfellow's, and it was just ridiculous. I liked that all his notes were included in the edition I bought, though, and it also contained little bits on Italian history of the time, making the whole allegory a little easier to understand. Of course, with an epic poem, you really have to draw your own meaning.
I heard the A Clockwork Orange movie is better than the book (go Kubrick!), but I have neither seen nor read it, so I can't say for myself.
I also would like to recommend Homer's Odyssey. Just make sure that if you read it, it was not translated by WHD Rouse, who butchered it, and take the time to track down a verse version. The one I read was in prose (novel format), and it was nasty. Great story, though.

Oh, God! I forgot Beowulf and the Canterbury Tales! Both are classics, and I would recommend them to anyone. I'm not sure whose translation of each I read.

How about the authors on those?
By the way, Suzu, Of Mice And Men and The Pearl were both written by John Steinbeck.

I can't believe I forgot this book. The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. It's definitely in my top five. Probably in competition for #1.

10 is just a suggestion feel free to add as many books as you want.

I read of Mice and Men it was really good. I always wanted to read travels with charlie by steinbeck. It sounds so interesting.

James And The Giant Peach - Roald Dahl (loved this as a kid)
Fox In Sox - Dr. Seuss
The Shadow of His Wings - unknown (a great book, but for the life of my, I can't remember the author)

You've gotta broaden your horizons. If you liked Clancy, you'd probably like Robert Ludlum. He's one of my dad's favourites, and he's a big Clancy fan too. Actually, all my dad reads are Clancy, Ludlum and Pierre Burton.
