Let me start off by saying that my computer is old (6 years or so), and though I know that the best solution is simply to get a new computer (no matter how cheap they are), college makes me able to have no money.

So! Here's the problem, there's a virus in my computer, and I don't have an anti virus (go figure...)

The thing though, is that it's a virus, but yet not a virus.

I mean, I get a couple of pop ups here and there (telling me that my computer is infected, and that I need an antivirus; obviously lies to click on those...), or XP giving me a message that my computer's performance is slowed down (give me a horrible time when I want to watch Lucky Star!!!).

    My simple question; help?

(Please don't tell me to go BUY an antivirus, I know I can do that, I'm just looking for other ways ^o^)

PS:I predict that at some point Teddz or Saber may answer :p (Don't take it the wrong way guys, on the contrary, I was trying to get to you guys, but my schedule is school/work....o_O)

You can run several free scans straight from your browser:
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

If you're too stingy to buy a commercial virus scanner, there are free alternatives for personal use, such as:
    http://www.avast.com/

I also recommend getting into the habit of cleaning spyware and registry garbage that accumulates from normal browsing over time. I keep the following two up to date and scan every week or so:
    http://www.safer-networking.org/

Best thing to do, besides BMSs überlinks, is to get a free sweep from Spysweeper

    http://www.webroot.com/consumer/downloads/

Other than that, I recommend all the above links that BMS posted.

Internet safety is #1 - always update your firewalls and antivirus programs. God bless NOD32 for being such a uber antivirus program ;)

Lol, I love you guys XD

But yeah, That's the first thing I'll do once I get home (currently at college).

It's not that I distrust ALL internet commercial virus scanner, it's just that the ones I see come on pop ups, leading to great misfortunes.

Again though, thanks for the links! I'll start doing the routine check ups from now on as well to give my computer more life time!

    you could start with....

Avira AV which is free and actually cleans the computer, unlike most of the online scanners now... that they tell you you have 300 viruses but make you buy the AV program...

    http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html

    after updating and running that

get your spybot search and destroy then...
    update, immunize system, scan...

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

    and after that.........
    Microsoft's Defender is actually good

    head over to...

Sunday, October 16th, 2007. Computer officially dead. o_O

Well, my hard drive's poofed anyways. I had my brother take a look at it, and said that the HD has been the problem. So now I have a dillema. Shell out money on a HDD, or use that money for Guitar Hero III...

Thanks for the help though guys, they were working, but the hardware is the big problem >.<

HDs are cheap now. Pick up a 300gb for 70-100 easy, even less if you look.
