Warner Bros. Has now announced they are switching to exclusively Blu-Ray releases. What does that mean? A very high probability that HD-DVD will be phased out in the near future.

Very interesting.. until now I've never heard about Blu-Ray before.

I don't know, if Blu-Ray would cost much, I don't think it will succeed, because -to me- I still think DVDs are little bit expensive.. unless they became cheap and I am not aware of it o.0

    :p

Edit: Here is an interesting question, what would they do with 25-50 gigs capacity?

I'm surprised you hadn't heard of either media. They've been at war for a few years now... and yes, HD-DVDs cost more than DVD, and Blu-Ray even higher than that. But that won't stop the consumers who are after the highest quality picture available for their home theater systems. :p

It will be the new standard, and DVDs will likely phase out as VHS tapes did, and cassette tapes for CDs before them. And a new tech will later emerge to blow away Blu-Ray (home holodecks anyone?). It's ceaseless.

    High Definition Media, that's what.

    For comparison -
The maximum video bitrate supported by a DVD is 9.8Mbps (at 480i resolution).
The maximum for HD-DVD is 29.4Mbps (at 1080p resolution).
The maximum for Blu-Ray is 40Mbps (at 1080p resolution).

One of the big selling points of the Playstation 3 is that it has a built-in Blu-Ray player (much like PS2 had a DVD player when it was newer tech).

    As far as the whole PS3 Blu-Ray thing goes;

To be honest, I mostly bought it because it's the cheapest Blu-Ray player around (was, at least). But 500 bucks to watch movies? Now, you may be thinking, well, it plays PS3 games. Answer; what games?

What gets to me is how is it that a standalone BD player marked a grand when the PS3 was 500!? Shouldn't standalone be cheaper? Is there something I'm missing?

HD-DVD isn't far off, the cheapest player is about 250, which is considerably cheaper, and even cheaper is the 360 add on HD-DVD Drive ($150).

I'm not a big quality freak either. I'm not looking for the blackest blacks and the best bitrate. My DVD's look fine the way they are. Why did I spend so much on a High def tv? So my DVD's would look worse than on an SDTV? Or to buy a player that upconverts them to their original quality?

In the end, there's only one side I'm one....

The one that will let me watch the new season of (say) Haruhi Suzumiya or Mai Otome (ie. new anime!)

has the porn industry decided? from what i understand, they were the deciding facter between beta and vhs. (nm, i guess they're jumping on the blu-ray bandwagon.)

and using it as a blu ary player still doesn't justify the money spent on a ps3 to me =p

I am. Once I start to save.

Blu ray is awesome. I love the clarity. And Big TV's.

All I got to say is FF 7. ;)

But it is a big pocket hit.

I like to watch this all nice and what not. So I will get it at some point. Need a big tv anyway.

Even if it takes me 4 years. heh

    So getting a PS3
