I like all of Tomita's work to some degree, but I think my favourite of his records, or pieces, are those where he creates his own unique medley of pieces, like on Bermuda Triangle (or even Snowflakes), rather than when he tries to do a complete classical composition and reinterprets it. For that reason, I enjoy even the slightly bland Dawn Chorus album, for example, more so than the Planets, and say Kosmos to Pictures at a Exhibition.
The weakest of the albums (although I don't have the live ones) for me is Grand Canyon, because its not a very interesting composition in the first place and the instrumentation, by Tomita's standards, are bland.
Does anyone else hear Tomita's music in a similar light? i.e. favouring his medley type pieces/albums more so than his attempts to pull off a whole symphonic piece?
