Not a fake. Seller says it was made for Bayer. Drug companies make all
sorts of giveaways for their agents, and custom LPs were very common.
I have several by Toscanini, Fiedler, and Stokowski, custom made by RCA
from existing LP masters, to help push various pills.

The key is to get a track listing. This is probably a "greatest hits" type
    of collection.

The excitement is over, folks - I heard back from the seller and the
    tracklisting is:

    Side 1
    Star Wars- main title 3'04
    Space Fantasy 9'10
    The Unanswered Question 6'16

    Side 2
    Peer Gynt:Solveig's song 4'42
    Hora Staccato 3'29
    The sea named Solaris 12'26

    One for completists only? ;-)

Ah, you beat me to it! :)
The cover art's kinda nice. Not worth going for, though, IMO.

  5. Thanks for getting the scoop Ben! As for the question "For completists
only?" - Well, I have been known to buy the domestic (US), as well as multiple
import LPs of the same title just to look at the different album cover artwork,
and to listen for any differences in the audio mix. ;-)

Well that's a fair enough point Andrew (although I did put a ;-) and
it's the first Tomita's Greatest Hits compilation
    (http://www.isaotomita.net/recordings/greatest.html) that had an
extended edit of the Star Wars theme that I'd never heard of before
    that time.

Which release is that? My copy of 5660-2-RC just has the 3:07 version.

  8. I recollect the vinyl version of Kosmos and the CD version different in Track one
which is Star Wars Main Theme. There was a short effect at the beginning of the track that
wasn't included in the CD version if I remember correctly which is probably why I prefer
    the vinyl version

For what it's worth it's the 3:46 or so version.
But yeah, it's confusion to knwo when you are getting it.

    Mainly and very noticeable
is it opens with a Star Wars "fanfare" type theme sort of straight and
only slightly adorned using the lead sound used throughout and then
segues into the recording we know. And then ends with "new" humorous
ending FX after the "dialog" and little quote still heard on the well
    known version.

So what is that sound at the end? A small film canister being spun or
something falling off a droid and rolling away (or both)?

    What is?

    http://www.isaotomita.net/recordings/greatest.html says that the extended
version is on 5660-2-RC, but I played mine right before I wrote the last
time, and it's 3:07. I'd like to know what CD releases have the extended
    version.

OK, I got out my LP copy of Kosmos (ARL1-2616) and the Star Wars Theme
is identical to that on my Greatest Hits CD (5660-2-RC). For that matter,
I got out my US CD of Kosmos (2616-2-RG) and the Japanese CD of Cosmos
(BVCC-2509), and they are all identical on this track,
    and all run for 3:04.

(That 3:07 I quoted earlier include silence at the end of the CD track.)

The longer version of Star Wars, but no, I don't have the best ofs

Beats me, they probably cobbled 5660-2-RC together for the overseas CD
    from the album dupe masters

I'd bet if it starts the album then its the longer version. But I can't confirm

5660-2-RC has it as track 6, right?

The extra intro and coda fx would surely disrupt the musical flow if
they stuck the whole thing the middle of an album

If I get time I will post an mp3 of the track in question (I believe
it is the US CD version that has the extended edit.)

Well, how do you like that... Because of this discussion, I went and
got the UK pressing of the Kosmos LP. There's the extended Star Wars
mix! I had never heard it before. It's not on the US LP, nor the US
    CD nor the Japanese CD.

    So what is the summary?

5660-2-RC is apparently a CD catalog number. Correct?

The catalog number on the UK LP is what exactly ?

We aren't talking about the same catalog number with content by region,
    or are we?

  17. A short while back I made a comment there was a longer version of Star Wars
    on the UK vinyl version
but there were no acknowledgemtns of it. Looks like the CD versions are
    shorter for some reason.

The short, 3'04 version was the original album version (confirmed by my 1978 vinyl
copy), so the UK 1984 CD had the "incorrect" 3'46 extended mix put on it. The 1991
Dolby Surround CD had the same shorter version as the original release, as did the US
Greatest Hits CD. The UK '84 CD also missed off the 'Aranjuez' piece altogether...

Like Kimbalion, I was unaware of the extended edit until I tracked down this 1984 UK
    CD of Kosmos.

I assume this 'error' was either because the original 1984 CD compiler simply person
picked the wrong tape out of the RCA archive when they premastered the CD, or else
I.T. or an RCA executive deliberately decided that they would use the master tape
with the extended version for the original CD release. I don't suppose we'll ever know
    - and anyway in my humble opinion its not exactly Tomita-san's finest recorded
    hour! ;-)

I have made a web page with the two versions on so that those without a copy can
    take a listen: http://www.benjaminward.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tomita/star_wars/

Thanks for making those MP3s. One correction, though: I just got the
UK LP, and it has the _longer_ version.

So, apparently the UK CD was just perpetuating what had already been
    released in the UK.

  20. I have to add that the "extra" bits don't even sound like Tomita, to me.
Maybe it's because I've lived with the shorter version for 25 years

At best I'd say they were early ideas that he discarded. They're thin
    sounding, not fully fleshed out.
