Truly frightening. I would keep my dog away from that forest... Man, it's like 28 Days Later: Squirrel Edition. Man, you'd think if something were wrong in the forests the squirrels lived in that someone would notice. Unless those park rangers aren't doing their jobs, humph?

    ARRGH!

I knew I should have invested in these "Killer Squirrels" when I had the chance!

I feel bad for the victim nontheless.

Eaten alive by squirrels... I can't think of a much worse way to go, be it man or beast.

    Ew...

I'm don't really know anything about squirrel pychology, but some thing seems to be driving them... nuts (excuss the pun). I guess their not the cute little furry tailed creatures that i was led to beleive.

Although it is common for creatures to take on uncharacteristic behavour when they are desperate for food.

The Running of the Squirrels... That was funny.

Anyway, back on topic. I thought squirrels didn't eat meat. Or was I wrong and doomed to be consumed by some starving squirrel some day?

    Squirrels are dangerous animals.

They may look cute, but inside of them, they are deadly flesh eating monsters.

    You have been warned.

That first post said it best. When you deprive an animal of one of its usual sources of nutrients it will instinctively find another to satiate it. They weren't getting very much protien so they went to the next best source- Meat.

Mother nature seems to enjoy taking the cute and cuddlies and turning them into terrible machines of death and destruction. I haven't been this afraid to go outside since the groundhog uprising of '97.

It's a serious issue, and hopefully they can do something about the pine-cone shortage..

I'd really like to see chipmunks terrorize cats though..

That is horrible. Poor dog. They so need to fix it before it gets worse.

But this is really weird.. maybe they ate/drank something?

Well, I don't think I've ever heard of toxic waste cases in public areas like forest preserves before... Maybe they were just starving. Still though, my question comes back to me. Do squirrels eat meat? I mean, I've always viewed them as eating things like acorns, pinecones, etc. Not dog meat! Man, that's scary. Truly frightening. Just think though, you may have to call in Animal Control, or the squirrles might go after humans!

That's normally correct, but the forest was out of pinecones so they went for other food.

I've never heard of a forest that's run out of acorns or nuts either. Seriously though, I think the squirrels should have plenty of food. They have a whole forest full of it. I guess not in this case.

The number of pinecones can be affected by numerous things:
    • Too much or too little rain
    • Disease of the entire plant or the reproductive system
    • Too many squirrels
    • Introduced or native species out competing the squirrels for resources(pine cones)
    • Something eating the pinecones before they develope
    • Not enough cross polination
    • Poor soil quality
    • Too much stress caused on the trees
    • Too little stress
    • General age of the forest

    Things to wonder:
    • Is the squirrel so specialized that all it eats are pinecones? If so why did they "eat" a dog?
    • Have the local predator species been wiped out?
    • What kind of dog was it?
    • Why hasn't disease or starvation caused a population crash?
    • Why is the ecosystem so screwwed up?
    • What role have humans played in this ecosystems unbalanced state?
    • What has the weather pattern been for the past 5 years?
    • Have they noticed anything else wrong with the ecosystem, like a lack of hawks or foxes? Or perhaps an over abundance of a certain type of insect?
    • Have they noticed anything else wrong with the general health of the pine trees? Drooping needles? Large amounts of sap coming from the trees? ANYTHING?

    So many questions....

People are observant to a point... after that they either see what they want to see, or nothing at all.

Also, toxic waste usually just kills things one way or another... not make normally placid pinecone eaters into savage dog eaters. If it were toxic waste or rabies then the things should be dropping dead very soon. I say they screwwed over the ecosystem and didn't really care... until somebody's dog gets killed. =)
I predict a traumatic drop in squirrel populations... one way or the other.
