So "ja arimasen" is another way of saying "dewa arimasen"?

 

Well, in basically yes. "Dewa" is the humble/polite form of "ja".

 

Thanks, I understand it now. I tried to teach myself Japanese half a year back. Don't know anyone who speaks Japanese though, so I don't have any real practice speaking it. Stopped studying it a while back due to school taking up too much of my time. The plan now is to take it up again when I finish high school, the summer 06.

Er...I think it might be more corrent to say that "ja" is the colloquial form of "dewa", since "dewa" is technically the 'proper' term.
