I plan on buying a laptop or desktop in the next year or so and have some ideas in mind but need some advice on the most bang for my buck... i plan on spending up to $5000 US and dont really care about the operating system (i was looking at LG or AlienWare pc's though). I need an awesome processor and plan on getting a second hard drive or external harddrive for a laptop. I was also planning on getting the athlon 3000+ (processor). what i need though is speed power memory. Basically a customiseable pc and room to upgrade. Also if i get a desktop i need a flat screen. Thats about it (even thought thats a lot of spec.s lol). Im looking for any advice on what to buy and what i can et for the best price....

Dell is probably the ultimate advertising company for customizing to get what you want and they're close to the top when it comes to their computer's abilities. If you want to play games a lot then I suggest something from Alienware. They're the best gaming computer company out there. Both Dell and Alienware sell flat screens but I reccomend Alienware because they have a lot more style and therefore their products look a lot better. You can get a lot for $5000 so it's all about choosing.

Although, if you want something from Dell I suggest you get one of their new magazines to choose what you want and then call them because it's a pain in the neck to find stuff on their website.

I heard GateWay (and I think it was also) HP that got a Dual Core Processing computer. They're supposed to work really fast, and come with some really nice stuff, like a 19 LCD Flat Screen, and a 500GB hard. I think that the GateWay was fully upgradable, but it already costs $2000 from the beggining. However, this computer's no pushover. It can take some serious programs without flinching.

Dell's got *amazing* coupons. They release it very often now. My $2000 laptop cost me $1380. With the Dell XPS (their gaming 'top) you can get quite a bit of power out of 5k. Especially now, since Dell is starting to release the 40% over $1899 coupon. Obviously, the coupon works MIRACLES the more cash you put into the system. You can check coupons out on bensbargains.net.

What makes Dell so good is that they also introduced Full Damage Protection in most major USA states. Meaning, I can *break* my laptop on purpose, and they'll cover the sucker. HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!

But, with 5 GRAND, I'd get a good laptop (I adore my 6000, as it's not small...but it ain't a monster to carry around like teh XPS), and get a MONSTER desktop. My laptop would be Dell, and my deskie would be custom.

BTW: How can I get 5k in spending money? =P

I was looking at mac comps b/c i need the multi media aspect too espscially if i plan on majoring in music next year at college. I need certain programs like Sibelius and others that take a lot of processing power and memory.. (i think the major program i need takes .5 Gb of memory b/c it is so immence and it costs $500 US for the program lol )

freaking damned I uberly over did the budget for teh compy...

    Subtotal: $6,952.07

I'll cheap out a bit trying to maintain the most important stuff to round it to 5K and still keeping the essential beast...

edit... well with I'll have to cut 2 HDDs and get "slow" 7800GTXs instead of pre OCed, and get "cheap"er ram

and WC would be out of the question... but I'll conpensate ;)

Can you spare 2 grand? I'm guessing not when it's 7 grand total.

What are the specifics for this computer? Cause for this amount it's gotta be worth the green.

Dell XPS. Combine that with the bensbargains.net coupon that pops up every now and again, and you can get a much nicer computer than Alienware will ever give you. Trust me and Saber.
