What you should have heard (official AMD line) is that an AthlonXP 2600+ should get the same performance as their old Athlon would if it had a clock speed of 2600. (XPs are more efficient says AMD)

In practice, everyone knows they are claiming that an AthlonXP 2600+ performs about the same as a Pentium running at 2600 mhz.. but whatever.

It should be fine. Clock speed isn't everything! As even Intel is finally admitting. Their new naming scheme is going to be a doozy.. chips will come in the 300 series, the 500 series and the 700 series with no mention of clockspeed anywhere. Anyone else think they ripped off the scheme from BMW? :D
