Computers Scored myself a free used hard drive...

I just got myself a free internal 40GB hard drive, I was planning on adding it into my computer, to give it a bit of a boost, if I could.

Anyway, the problem is I have no idea what to do with it or how to connect it or use it, or if there's anything I should be doing with it before I start using it (except reformatting, right?) I know the computer it was taken from was having some serious start-up problems before it was taken out, but it was connected to another computer to have the files moved, and nothing was amiss.

Can anyone walk me through the process I'll need to follow?

 

When you have plugged your harddrive in, start your computer.

Open Bios and set your main drive as "Master" and this 40 GB drive as "Slave".

After that you have fixed those settings, the bios will restart the computer, and when you have entered the windows screen, check to see if there is a partition of that drive. If not, create a new partition by using the buildin function from Windows. (Don't use Partition Magic, it ****ed my computer so...).

You should put up a link to that guide. It sounds like a very useful utility for both those who are modding thier first computer for those who have already built thier own powerhouse.

Something I noticed about older harddrives sometimes you need to screw with the jumper configuration on the back in order to get the second HDD to act like a slave, vice a primary. If you're using an old IDE drive check along the back where the cable plugs in and look for a little row of pins with a jumper plugged in. Examine the underside right beneath those pins and it should tell you which row is for making the drive a slave. Simply pull the jumper out and slot it into that row, then plug her in. Often times windows will do all the hard work for you.

Newer Raid arrays dont have that issue anymore, I believe.

That windows partitioning is harder to find than you may think. It's been so long since I've partitioned anything that I've forgotten where it is. Teddz was deliciously vague about that as well, so after I fish up that info I'll send it your way.

Thanks for the offer, but the helpful guys on vB.com pretty much beat you to it by... several hours. I need to get the cords to connect it first and then I should be good to go, with their help.

I need to know how to reformat a hard drive though, I'm going to be doing that before I start using it.

I got it installed without incident, just letting you know. I've got a floppy drive I'm thinking about installing, and my old 1 GB hard drive from my old (11 yr) computer, but I'm wondering if I should even bother.

Anyway, both my hard drives are working perfectly! ^^ I had to put the new one in the extra slot for a DVD drive since I couldn't see another HD slot, but it worked out pretty well. ^^

PS: Izzy + Teddz + Shen = Super Hentai Bros, right? They battle the evil MAIP (Mothers Against Internet Pornography) for control of ever greater amounts of hentai, and to hopefully win the hand of the lovely Princess Hentai, better known as Bloodberry.

I personally wouldn't bother installing a 1 gigabite hard drive. It is like 3 episodes. You should be happy with the free one you got.

Nothing but a bunch of old useless files that my grandpa would never miss. Now it's got 30 gb of anime stored on it.

Anyway, I'm pretty much all set for now. My new hard drive, a floppy drive, and a new monitor now. ^^
