    Either Jason, or Freddy Krueger I suppose.
    Or maybe Leatherface..

    As far as I know, Leatherface is the oldest and fairly well known one, his first movie being back in 1974, followed by Michael Meyers of the Halloween fame in 1978. 1980 brought the first Jason Vorhees flick, Friday The 13th and Freddy Krueger dated in 1984. Logic says being the oldest, Leatherface would be the most well-known but I would say that Freddy Krueger is one that's more "famous". You ask people who Leatherface is, they generally know. You ask them who Freddy Krueger is, they know. You ask them who "Jason" is, they get confused and when you ask about Michael Meyers, they start blabbing about the last Austin Powers movie...

    Anyways, for me, Freddy would be the best.
