    Hello Everyone

Sorry if this is old hat, but could someone tell me, or point me to
somewhere on the web, that would have the full story behind the
non-availability of The Tomita Planets for so many years?

    Best Regards
    Paul Mundy

since no one answered, it was only un-available in England. It was
available in other parts of the world since it's release.

I suspect the Holst estate had the ability to withhold the work in the
UK through legal channels and did. Around this time the Elgar estate
withheld a W. Carlos arrangement on the grounds that it was altering the
work. Generally in other parts of the world, you can just pay the
    royalties and record a piece.

And of course there is the irony that Patrick Gleeson's far more
faithful (but mechanical) arrangement never made it to the CD era.

As for web resoueces, I don't think its the kind of thing anything but
serious fans have any reason to chronical and AFIK none of the fans, who
are probably all here have more than just the above basic fact. Anyone?

Not that there is a connection but its interesting "Kosmos", the next
album dropped 2 tracks in the UK. Both would have meant royalties to an
estate and a then living composer.

Tomita page, since I'm not really British I don't even mention it.

Indeed, Gustav Holst's daughter, Imogene Holst, obtained that Tomita's
    Planets European edit was unavailable.

I learned the same about W. Carlos "Pumps and Circumstances", thank you,
Nick. I supposed it, but didn't know. On the UK release, "Pumps and
Circumstances" was replaced by a "pastiche" of commercial radio stations,
called "Stay Tuned". Does anyone know anything about this ? As english is
not my language, I didn't understand everything and probably missed some
    humoristic stuff.

I do not know about the European edit at all. It was released in the US
and Japan and was never stopped by the Holst's relatives. It is still
available in the USA, having been CD remastered/surround processed
    around 1991.

the title is Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance"

the Carlos parody is "Pompous Circumstances". I never heard the UK
replacement tracks, only the US version.
