There is a new virus that attacks people around the globe! Not sure if any of you have been struck by this one though.

It's a Kelvir.B type virus that spread through the likes of MSN messenger!

Remember don't press it! I have been affected of it right now!

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.kelvir.c.html

    Read all about it!

Upgrade your antiviruses, Firewalls, antivirus arsenal!

    [EDIT]

    There's a VERSION C now. I think that's one that I got. Man I just discovered that Copy/Paste function has been disabled too...jeez. [/EDIT]

From the looks of the looks of the article, it sounds like a real bugger eh? Especially since it affects almost every windows there exists. But it's nice to be warned now. I use MSN a lot, and that could be a major biggie for me, since i don't know how to hadle viruses that well, i'm just not that good with computers.

Thanks a lot for this Major warning Teddz! I think this should help most people that view this thread, don't get too many Virus warnings lately, so this is a big help!

Ok, I think what the problems are after being effected:

#1. I think I have a fake Start menu, cause I cannot minimize all my programs anymore.

#2. Norton / Search / Other various windows apps have been "slowed down" or just out of function

#3. Windows Starts really, REALLY, slow.

Beware! Don't fall like I did. Anyone out there with help?

My only recomendation to you is this

*Scan for virus Via a LAN (I preffer wireless) and eliminate the problem. And if that doesen't work, you'll probably have to re-install your computer. And losing all your memmory in the process. I'd try #2 as a last option.
Again, Im not really a computer wiz, but I get the basics. If there's any options besides mine (or if Im wrong) please correct me in a polite way.
    Nevertheless, I hope I helped!

You could just read the directions for removal in the link in the opening post. As far as a reformat (not reinstall) goes, yeah, theres that, but it's overkill.

Indeed. But if the virus is starting to tick you off (like those stupid pop-ups i used to get), then that'd be my first option. But thats just me. I really dont have any files here that are irreplacable. Everyone else does, i think.

That's a thought. I should back-up my files just in case. And download another virus-scan program.

Although, I suppose it's a good thing I always scan my received files before I open them. Even if they come from a trusted source, such as yourself. Looks like this one only starts when you open the file, so I'll probably be safe from it.

Good luck getting that piece of garbage off your computer!

I blame Fred Cohen, creator of the first computer virus. :p

But seriously, why do people have to make these stupid viruses? Do they get some sort of sick pleasure out of the fact that they're causing problems for people all over the world? Gah, people like that make me sick.

    Reformatting Is _not_ A Solution

It's like using a Nuke to cure the flu!

Here's my solution (haven't tested it tho... and I don't want to be a guinea pig :D )

    a) Check which version of the virus you got. Or actually... which version of the virus got YOU :p

Symantec info page for variant B
Symantec info page for variant C
Symantec info page for variant D

    b) Jot down (the heck, print it! Or even better, save to a text file!) the registry keys affected.

To fix, you must delete all values it has added. Just CAREFUL! Delete the offending values, NOT the whole keys!!!!

    c) Reboot in SAFE MODE.

    d) Use REGEDIT and remove the offending values in the corresponding keys. DON'T FORGET TO DELETE THE VIRUS FILE when you're finished!
    In case of variant d, it's "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nvsc32.exe".

Just remember: You have to do it from SAFE MODE!
