Hello, I'm new to this mail circle but I've been into Tomita for years and
have many 70s/80s albums on vinyl.

I want to ask: what's your favourite Tomita album from your collection and
    why?

I have Snowflakes; Pictures; Firebird; Planets; Kosmos (US); Bermuda
Triangle; Greatest Hits; Space Walk; Linz; Dawn Chorus and (on CD) Best of..
I did have Back to Earth on cassette until it snapped (boohoo)

My fave is Pictures at an Exhibition. The short snappy (and varied) tracks
gave it immediate appeal (for when I was a teenager) and I was grabbed by
the wide variety of strange sounds which jumped out the stereo. In
particular I liked the 'choir' sounds (how did he do it?). It's as if
Pictures was always intended to be a choral symphony (which it wasn't). In
my opinion this certainly has to be his most interesting album and an
    improvement on Snowflakes.

I used to play this one at parties! The real conversation stopper was Ballet
of the Chicks in their shells - a 1 minute classic. It's like the orchestral
version but with cheeps and clucks over the top - like a cartoon. On the
other hand Catacoombs and others are very dark sounding.

The climatic Great Gate of Kiev has to be the best ending of any Tomita
album with the choir, strings and bells thundering to a crescendo - a much
richer 'orchestra' than the orchestral version. In fact I saw an orchestral
performance of Pictures and frankly found it rather dull after listening to
Tomita's. You find yourself going 'cluck cluck' and 'bah bool bah' at
certain moments (I'm referring to The Old Castle and Bydlo for the latter
    sound).

My second favourite it probably Firebird - in particular 'Night on Bare
Mountain' (more Mussorgsky). For some reason the discography lists this as
the follow up to 'Snowflakes are Dancing' when it was really 'Pictures at an
    Exhibition'. Can this be amended?

    Chris

    Hi Chris
Tomita did his choir parts on a mellotron keyboard
run through Moog filters and envelopes(a mellotron was
a tape playback based keyboard predating
sampling.which had orchestral and vocal sounds etc.)

Firebird is my favorite. I was 14 when I saw it in a record store and gasped. Until then Wendy
Carlos had inspired us with Switched on Bach etc but I was a Ravel/Stravinsky lover and wondered if
someone would ever do something with more sonically daring material. When I saw "Firebird" in the
obscure electronic.sound effects section I just gasped. I took the bus back home, convinced my mom
to give me next weeks allowance early and bussed back just before the store closed in time to buy
the vinyl. Weeks later I bought Pictures at an Exhibition and Snowflakes are dancing. I wore them
all out within a few months and bought two more vinyl sets over the next few years before finally
    getting them on CD.

Naturally my other favorites would be Planets and Bermuda Triangle and I have multiple copies of
them on vinyl and CD too. Friends think I'm nuts but I love seeing other "nuts" on this dicussion
    list.

Does anyone remeber Kraft and Alexander? They did Nutcracker and 1812 on ARP synthesizers circa
    1979.

    Hi all

I am a Tomita devotee and nhave been since 1975 after first listening to
    Snowflakes.

I have a sealed Japanese cd pressing of Grand cnyon suite.

    Is anyone interested in buying??

My all time favourite album has to be the Ravel album - it encompasses
everything that is good associated with electronic music - subtle, dynamic
and most particularly atmospheric - most disappointing was the last Bach
    Fantasy.

    best regards to all
    Philip

Yes I remember the Kraft and alexander album - I still have it on vinyl and
have transferred it onto cd as I have with another electronic music album
called - Everything you always wanted to hear on the Moog - but were afraid
to ask - all classical and all pure moog synthesiser - considering the album
is close to 30 years old the sound quality is superb

My favourites are and always have been:

    Pictures at an Exhibition
    Firebird
    Planets
    The Bermuda Triangle

and of course: SOUND CREATURE (The Milky Way railroad is just hard to
    beat!)

I also like the other albums, but there are some weak points in the choice of
repertoire and arrangements disturbing me on "Ravel Album" (Bolero), "Space
Fantasy" (Star Wars, Hora Staccato) and "Grand Canyon Suite". With "Dawn
Chorus" and the following two "live" albums, the overall sound of Tomita is
getting less inspired IMHO (due to the use of digital equipment?).

    Hi all,

My favorite album is pictures at exhibition, however I also like
    these:Bermuda Triangle,Kosmos,snowflakes.

I also remember those guys Walter Carlos,Krwfart, and Jean Michel, and Why
    not? Mr. Giorgio Moroder,and

    so many others.

And at last one question for all of you:

Is any one know the performer of one Japanese Cartoon named KOKU (is a young
    kid kind of caveman

having adventures with friends and animals of those years)In somewhere 1977
    to 1982?.

    Great song.

    Best Regards to all.

    Carlos.
