I know MPEG a bit better, BUT,
DivX is abou 3 to 4 times smaller!!!!
    a made a 46MB HQ MPEG file a
    11MB HQ DivX movie file...
almost same quality (obviously I ain't going
to get the same quality, but if i had the
original with which they made the MPEG
It would most problably be better looking
    than the MPEG one)
Or you have a better CODEC?
share the name of that codec

I alternate with DivX5 Professional and the Nimo Codec pak. Actually, I just pretty much use both. I don't know...my DivX player still works, and my "Back to the Future" file plays with sound now that I had installed Nimo. *shrugs*

I'd say, stick with DivX5, and if you can get it, get Pro. It's always a good thing to get! :D

Divx is pretty good, any version.

I would bet more people have divx 3.11 than 5.*
I like 3.11, it isnt as easy to work with though. divx4 is also nice, and you don't have to worry about adware etc.

Yeah, i know you're going to say "didn't you read the
    support thing the site?"
I like to figure out the codecs out...
I got the nimo codec pack too...

I prefer DivX to MPEG for the smaller file size. One episode of Enterprise takes up an entire cd to itself in mpeg form. Thats not even an hour, because commercials are removed.

Yet with DivX avi files, I can fit about 88 minutes if the file sizes are large, or even several hours if they are smaller files (and there isnt much, if any, drop in quality.

Thats impressive. A 50 meg avi with similar quality to a 200 meg avi?

Mpeg is, however, useful for making VCDs. But, with the advent of TMPGenc, converting an avi to an mpeg is pretty painless. The only thing I havent had luck with so far is Vandread, which is in wide-screen format. Wide screen doesnt seem to take to VCD too well. Even after I managed to get it on, the sound was messed up. And subtitles were hard to read. :(
