  1. Well...

The recent release of the Planets 2003 re-kindled my desire for the music of
Kimba, so I did a google, and it seems that the original U.S. version of
Kimba is now available on DVD also! (as of 25-Mar-03). CD Universe lists the
disc audio track as Dolby Digital Stereo. Was the original US release in
    stereo?

    The blurb:
Spread over 4 DVD's, this boxed set contains 26 classic episodes of the
popular kids anime show KIMBA. First broadcast in 1965, this series set the
benchmark for future Japanese cartoons, while lovingly telling the tale of
the little white lion and his friends

    See this link:

    ovie
or if the link doesnt work, goto http://www.cduniverse.com and search for
    kimba.
Quite a few of the other larger dvd sellers also list the dvd's, as a four
    box set.

If anyone else has more info on this (kimbawlion?), then please let me know.

My poor credit card is really getting hit this month...

    Regards,
    Lance

I have a review of the technical side of the release on one of my sites:
    http://kimba.tvheaven.com/dvdrev.htm
Naturally, I think the _content_ is super. The technical aspects are not
worthy of a major label, however. In regards to the sound (which is mono,
    btw):
"When I put the disc on for the first time, my wife --who was in the next
room-- said, 'what did they do to the sound?' The theme song sounds like it
    came from alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.clueless-newbies. Absolutely incredible
that anyone, much less someone with a reputation like Rhino's, could put out
such a thing: severely muffled, yet with excessive sibilance. Fortunately,
the soundtracks for each episode fare a great deal better. They are somewhat
mid-range heavy, but that's probably the way the dubbed soundtracks were
produced. TV was not hi-fi in the 60s."

The bottom line is they used the same video masters as was used to produce
the VHS tapes in 2000, and those came from used TV syndication prints. The
picture suffers the worst, but I can't tell if the limited frequence range of
the soundtracks represents the way they were produced or the way they were
    filtered for video release.

I guess only a fanatic like me would have sought out the original dubbed
negatives, said to be in storage in New York.

The Japanese DVDs of this series have a wider frequency range, but are
plagued by overload distortion. I don't know why that should be.
