I've been wondering this for the LONGEST time...When NI go off in my own little world ^.^ And buy some anime online, I notice that VHS/DVD that have 2 episodes on it are always so much more money then VHS/DVD with 4 or 3 episodes on it! Why is this?!

Ranma and Evangelion are good examples for pricey animes...

Its greed and its distusting. Its why they space a six ep OVA series onto 3 DVDs. I'd say the only way teach them is to stop buying their stuff, but everyone does it. That would mean no more anime. Those diabolical bastards.

    $

Yup, it's all a money haul...I even think with the storage DVDs have, you could cram more than even Mordeth's suggested 5 or 6 per DVD... but it's all a grab for money...

It sucks even more for the heavy popular series (i.e. your mentioned Eva and Ranma) where they know they have the large fanbase that'll be forced to shell out serious cash for the quality anime experience they so long for...

You think the companies'd take more pity on us poor peeps, but on the flipside, there *is* a smaller market for anime than mainstream movie DVDs and they need to make a turnaround profit... But it does seme like they get overboard and wasteful with some things...

The real downfall is that it sometimes leads to people going over to illicit means to get their anime fill, since buying the licensed stuff is beyond their budget...

It's a real shame that the stuff isn't all that more mainstream...at least then it'd be cheaper...or so I delude myself to believe...

BakaMattSu, but then it wouldn't seem so special anymore, would it? :D

    Re: $

And there's the problem. This money grab is the whole cause of piracy. Things are priced way too high, so people actually spend hours downloading it and getting bad quality (not always, I know) when they could just pay for good quality video. They don't because the entertainment industry has priced them too high.

These prices drive people to piracy. What really sucks though, is that instead of reacting to market forces and lowering prices, they get congress to pass laws to protect their profits. Lawmakers are all in their pockets for some reason.

People downloading your stuff is a sign that it is too expensive, not that you should pass laws to protect your monopolistic interests.

For a glimpse of the evil that is coming, check out the SSSCA This bill makes it mandatory for all hardware to have copy protection built in. Among other things, it will make the following illegal:
    * Assembling a home-built PC.
    * Using a non-secure computer (ie, a computer built before the would-be implementation of the SSSCA) on a network.
    * University and corporate research on systems, debugging, security, and watermarking.

Here is an article discussing it.

Intel's Executive Vice President has said this about it: ""Any attempt to inject a regulatory process into the design of our products will irreparably damage the high-tech industry, It will substantially retard innovation, investment in new technologies, and will reduce the usefulness of our products to consumers.''

Let's just rewrite the constitution so it reads "We the Corporations, in order to ensure our endless supply of money, establish monopolies, insure the slavery of mankind, provide for ourselves, promote credit enslavement, and secure the blessings of governmental leadership to ourselves and only ourselves....et al"

I hate the entertainment industry. End rant.

Well, Constitutions aside, that is one mother of a crappy idea to me...

-What sort of impact would this have on any backup material I'd like to keep around?

-What does it mean for "harmless" activities such as fansub/dub or music video compilation

-What happens to all the old hardware that doesn't have this built-in protection?

-And back to the topic, does it mean these Anime groups can charge whatever they bloody want and get away with it?

BakaMattSu, sometimes ranting is fun, but it doesn't answer everything...

You could most likely watch the stuff you had already backed up on your old computer. Making new backups would be much more difficult.

good question. I imagine it would make it far more difficult.

"* Using a non-secure computer (ie, a computer built before the would-be implementation of the SSSCA) on a network. " At the least, it sounds like you'd have problems using your current computer on the internet.

    yes

Some of these answers are guesses based on what I understand the implications of this bill to be. Whatever the answers actually are, they are sure to be nasty.

Fun no. Important yes. These issues need to be known. I'm sorry I didn't answer your questions before you asked them.
