    Trying to keep it brief...

Basically, it's a follow up on a world disaster. Small pockets of the remaining humans struggle to survive against strange beings known as "Angels" using the mech-like "Evangellions"...

It starts out as a standard mecha anime, but after a while turns into a very thought-provoking and oft confusing story.

All in all, well worth the watch...

I would really like to get hold of more Neon Genesis Evangelion manga books; the first one already got me caught up with the story, though I don't really like all teh stuff about using the robots/evangelions and all the blasting and fighting and the sc-fi-ness.

Its as BakaMattSu says, it starts out with maybe a bit much focus on robots, but progresses rapidly from there. It is one of the best series I have seen. I know I don't carry much weight around here, but I would recommend it. I've never seen a series that gave me as much to think about. Plenty of obscure ties to old legend and tradition to keep one inerested beyond just viewing it, were one so inclined.

Weeelllll....actually, as we've been saying, it's not really all that much like Gundam.

There's a far different tangent of thought with this one. Gundam was all about the complexeties and politics of war overlain with big combat sequences. Eva questions not war, but soul and morality...

If you just to watch Eva for the fight sequences, you're missing out on the whole delicate points and comments that the series is trying to make on society and humanity as it stands.

    Basically, prepare to think...

I like the conflict and struggle in Eva between the main character and his father - to me, that's really meaningful and it's stuff like that that helps me to get a better impression of stories.

have u read why hideaki anno created EVA and everything? damn, this guy was seriously troubled when he decided to create this series. like, if you read the intro of the site i'm giving you, he came up with the idea pretty much after he returned to life. they guy was a major depressant, and it comes through in the anime...especially through Shinji's unwilling persona.

the last two episodes are simply amazing. to be honest, i couldn't really sleep at night after seeing ayanami rei have her head look like a demented balloon, but it was very...introspective.

the movie was excellent too, but the ending of the anime was by far the most thought provoking.

the manga, i believe it says in the site i'm supplying was created to focus on the character, not the battle vs. god. plus characters act a bit different too, like Asuka flirting with Shinji coming into Tokyo-3 high.

oh, the story of EVA is pretty much about the evils of human nature. cowardice in shinji, pedophilia in misato (c'mon you know she wants to!), abandonment in gendo, adultery in *both* ristuko and her mother to gendo, arrongance in asuka (in major abundance), and stuff like that. at least, that's how i got to thinking about it, especially after working through the whole site.

well, i'll give you the site now

    Eva Forever in ourselves

While I'm not sure about the pedophilia (though I know she *spoiler* in the movie), I agree that it's about what is at the core of Human beings. Possessing minds has given us the power to do more than simply survive, unlike other animals. But this great power has driven man to be the single most creative and self-destructive race on the planet. Therefore, is it our minds that principally fuel the very best and worst actions of mankind? Evangelion seems to observe the actions and effects that our internal and abstract minds have on the physical, real world. Shinji is a creature who (with his mind) is trying to resolve his perspective on life. This internal struggle with his creation (and I believe creator, in the form of Gendo and God) is externalised with his battles with the angels sent by God itself. SEELE are part of the effort trying (again with their minds) to artificially stimulate the evolution of mankind. An evolution where the hole in every human being (where god is suppposed to reside in each of us) is filled by compressing the minds of the entire human race into a single entity, thereby filling the holes and creating a new god. This can only be put into effect using the Evangelions and the angels. I haven't actually seen the movie, so I am unclear on how they are to use Adam to put this into effect. But it appears that there can be two kinds of third impact, one created by the humans using the evas, thus initiating the human instrumentality project, and the other created by god, using the angels. Thus what we see in the series is the human race trying to prevent god from initiating its third impact. As far as I know, End of Evangelion is about SEELE trying to start the human instrumentality project. Please correct me if I'm wrong, or I've just been babbling nonsense.

I was just kidding about Misato...though I know she doesn't really know how to express concern other than that of a more physical nature. And about Adam, I don't think there ever was really an Adam in the series. I mean, yeah, they talked about it and it *did* cause Second Impact,

    SPOILER
but the embryo that Kaji brought was Lilith, EVA-01 is too, as is Rei.

And you are mostly right about the Impact, except that the Movie was supposed to replace Episodes 25-26. Instead of "seeing" Instrumentality from Shinji's mind...you see what actually happens. And what happens is *not* as happy as you see in the original episode 26...*shiver*

    MEGA SPOILER

Shinji-kun, in the series, decides for himself that life is worth living for. That in all his experiences and all the people that he meets, it's all those Shinji's that they "see" and the Shinji that he sees within himself that makes up the "real" Shinji. He decides life is worth living.

In the movie, he becomes "Adam" after a fashion. He bonds with Lilith/Rei/Eva-01 and bears the decision after everyone turns into LCL. The decision he has is to decide whether he wants to be a part of everyone else, or be separate with our own AT fields. If you've seen the movie, it's obvious that he chose to remain separate from everyone else. And, coming to the conclusion that Asuka came back as well, I think everyone filters back slowly.

Well, I think combine those two, and you get the true ending. How he decides to keep everyone separate from a collective mind is seen in the series, but what's going on before hand and the process to do so is shown in the movie.

Yup, big fan of the movie. And did anyone find it wierd that Asuka was wearing the exact *SAME* bandages that Rei wears? The one that covers her eye and has a sling? *WHOA* :dizzy2:

    End of Evangelion

The beauty of evangelion, in both the series and the movie (from what I've read) is the many interpretations that different fans have taken from it. It is almost as if Mr. Anno is directly addressing each individual viewer when Shinji mutters:
'This is the me that exists within your mind' in that this is the ending which you, the individual, has decided. Was Anno unsure as to how to resolve the show, or was he trying to give each member of the show's audience the same crucial desicion that Shinji was faced with at the end. I think that ultimately both endings (one which I have seen, the other which I have read about -yes I know this is a problem) are optimistic, albeit for different reasons. The series is optimistic for obvious reasons, which for spoliers sake I wont detail.

    SPOILERS:
The movies ending I would see as optimistic for different reasons.

    1. Shinji decides that he can justify his life without trying to fill the voids that exist in everyones lifes, that is the pain that each and every human must bear, to be called a human. The importance of bearing of this pain was detailed a bit more by Kaoru in ep.24.
    2. I agree with Izzy Izumi, I think that as everyones mind is stored in the (Primordial Soup) LCL, those who (quote Misato) 'Have the will to survive' will also emerge from the LCL. Well, though this may not be everybody, I believe many would emerge (though Rei could not).
    3. Even if no-one else was to emerge from the LCL, would a life alone with Asuka be that bad?:p

The ending was strange, but understandable.

PS: That weird smile Rei does every so often scares the hell out of me... they weren't paying the aniumators enough. :D

    For sure

The movie was probably my favourite part of the whole thing.. except for that episode where Shinji and Asuka have to learn to work together and fight as a team cause that was the funniest!
