Well, actually I am Russian.I know Ireland rather well (I study Irish history and I've stayed there once for almost a year) and I know anime rather well. But I do not know anything,in fact, about how much anime is popular in Ireland. My friends told me, that anime is actually not very popular in Ireland, much less, for exemple, than in USA or even in Russia and that some Irish people dislike anime because they believe that it is anti-Christian. (Of course, things like "it's for kids" are familiar to me as well...) But how do you think, what really the situation is?
What is popular with the Irish otaku? What do you think,is enough anime available enough for you?

    Go raibh maith agaibh

Anime here is not extremely popular, well proper anime. Dubbed anime, like Pokéon, Yu-Gi-Oh and *spit* Beyblade is popular among the useless youth, but most of the people who watch them don't even know they are anime. Actual anime fans are not common, but often rather ferverent. We have almost no means of getting anime legaly in this country, which sucks ***. There are only around 3 shops in the country that sell it, and most of them have very sparse anime stock. Anti-christianity would not be a reason why it's not popular though. Those sorts of sensibilities are long outdated, and pretty much only the elderly would consider such things. The attitude that anime is strictly for kids would be more prevailing, and is the main reason that anime isn't popular. I don't know about russia, but anime is a lot less popular here than in the US, and in mainland europe, and pretty much everywhere. Irish otaku like what all otaku like, anime that's good. Personaly, I like FLCL, Fruits Basket, Escaflowne, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and many other shows. Hate noir though. Goddamn noir. Should burn in hell. Grrr...
Why do you ask anyway? Just curiosity?

I agree with DL, Anime is not popular at all in Ireland... There are few people who watch it, as this usually means you have to import it from overseas, or else download it from the Internet (Broadband Internet is not widely available either).

I've tried to seek out more people that are interested in anime, and this forum is the result. I guess the forum represents a small portion of the Irish interest in anime... I know many more otakus that aren't registered here, so it's really hard to estimate the size of the otaku population in Ireland :)

The main reasons people are not interested in anime is not because of religious reasons, but I think it's more because they associate it with children's cartoons or else they think it's all perverted hentai...
A lot of people seem to quickly enjoy it once exposed to it though.

I believe that UK/Irish television stations will eventually start showing Japanese animation more frequently, hopefully exposing the awesomeness of anime to more people around the country :)

If you have the Sky Digital TV package you already have access to better anime which is broadcasted to the UK....

Anyway, it's nice to see you have an interest in Irish anime :)
    See you around

    1. So do we. What we had on TV lately is Sailor Moon (not censured, thanks!), Pokemon and Candy-Candy (if you ever heard of it - an old but still nice show). But there are a LOT of people who can download anime from Internet and who can sell it or trade. I know people who have more than 300 titles in their lists.
    2. Sad, but true... Nevertheless, if there are people who are still interested in anime (and, perhaps, share the values expressed therein -- in a way :))), that means that "those sorts of sensibilities" are not died out absloutely, isn't it?
    3. Because I am now in Ireland, and, of course, I wonder if there are people who share my other interests...

well, it appears you are no anime n00b :) good good!

if you search through this form, ner the beginning you will find a large thread where everyone posted their lists... it ain't entirely accurate any more as i'm sure most people got a bit more anime since they posted in there but it can give you an idea of what people here have

It's not me, anyway - I am there just for a month :).
I've spent almost a year in Ireland as a visiting student, but that was six years ago.
I have absolutely no idea what IRC is...

See how friendly we all are? The thread's only half an hour old and it's already got 56 views(<Mordeth> damn russian chicks are hot). Well, irc is "internet realay chat", just an app that lets you chat to people, like ICQ or AIM only better. If you want to chat with us, go here The n00b's guide to irc.. Once you have mIrc started, just type in /join #eirtaku and you'll find yourself among our midst. Although, Kenshin did voice concerns that mirc won't work with the TCD firewalls, but hopefully it will. We await you.

You can't use IRC from TCD because of the firewalls, etc, unless you have an account with the netsoc server, or similar.

If you use AIM or something, with could chat with that instead I guess...
