Me and my friends were asking all these really stupid questions one day. And then one of my friends brought up this question. How did anime become so popular!? We all love anime, to no end. But how did we get into it. So i thought I would ask this question to all of you, to see what you say. How did you get into anime? Was it from a friend? Or was it because you loved Sailormoon and just went forward from there? Well thanks a bunches. ^^

[Ack, kinda long ^^;] But Sailor Moon began it

For me, I watched Sailor Moon's dub when I was six. I thought, 'Oh, how pretty!' For a few years I watched it, and when the internet became available at my place when I was 12 I had to find out more and found Hitoshi Doi's transcripts, other sites with screenshots plus transcripts, and I wondered why a lot of things weren't shown on tv.. Then a year later I watched 'Cardcaptors' and it kept me interested but I would see in the credits 'Card Captor Sakura'. One day I felt so fluffy watching a certain episode that just had to find gallery pictures. I typed 'Cardcaptors' at google, discovered Card Captor Sakura, and was printing out any media possible like artbooks, galleries, special cards for the movies and episode, and Clow Book.We didn't have the internet for a year but when we found a better ISP I found winmx and typed in 'Card Captor Sakura' and began there, starting from episode one, getting mp3's and such also. Then at a CCSakrura manga site, there was Love Hina there also, so I downloaded that and loved the story. When Inuyasha came to Canada, I watched the two episodes aired and downloaded them fansubbed in Japanese, working hard on my l'il 56k to be an episode or two above the English version so I can hear the original first and watch the high quality later. Then I found a place online where the latest Inuyasha manga chapters came out in mandarin, so downloaded hem for a while until the site went down. Then my friend who doesn't like manga gave me two manga magazines; one of them Nakayoshi, and then I loved Daa Daa Daa and some others..and found others online like Scrapped Princess, Wolf's Rain and such.

So yeah, that's how it happened for me.

Sailor Moon did not begin it. Sailor Moon was a catalyst. However the real introduction of anime began with Kimba the White Lion, Astroboy, Battle of the Planets and Robotech.

For me it all started with Toonami when I was 10. (yes 10) I couldn't help but watch all those great shows, but I never thought I'd became a huge anime fanatic. Then, one night, during a summer a couple years ago, I saw my first episode of Inuyasha. Then, I was hooked to anime. Now I'm searching tragically for Love Hina manga's and Naruto to no end. :sweat2:

Neph, I believe that the question was a personal one, not a nation-wide expanse as far as being exposed to it. But, knowing you, that's the way you got into anyway. ^_^ So, ignore the sentence before last.

Anyway, for me, it was Transformers. Well, the movie, anyway, which was partially made in Japan. That was the first real cartoon I enjoyed, after that, I just watched cartoons all the time. My dad was into Robotech, so I watched a little of it...can't have liked it too much because I don't remember anything about it.

So, anyway, years later, I was playing basketball with my friends. A friend of mine named Chris asked me if I wanted to borrow some stuff. So I said, "Sure". He ended up letting me borrow the Kimagure Orange Road OVA on VHS tapes. I didn't know what it was at the time, but I really enjoyed it.

A few months later, Ronin Warriors went on the air. I watched that EVERY morning at 6 am in middle school just to see Ryo and the rest of the Warriors battle Talpa and all that. Must have watched the entirety of the two combined seasons...twice, with the last being cut off when they went into the evil universe place.

After that, Sailor Moon took over the Ronin Warriors timeslot, and disappeared forever. Ronin Warriors (that's Yoroiden Samurai Troopers to you anime-nostalgia nuts) was the FIRST anime I watched which I knew what it was. After that, well, it's just expanded to what I watch/have watched/etc now.

I remember having friend back in junior high who were into Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo... never really got into those, though. I had a sort of passing interest in them, but was never hooked. I saw quite a few short series and anime films, too, but none of those struck a chord either. What did it for me was seeing Neon Genesis Evangelion on a local station that ran subs. From there, I was no longer just watching things which happened to be anime and thinking they were decent - I was actively seeking out other anime series.

Of course, the series that really cemented my fandom was Tenkuu no Escaflowne.

the way i got in to anime was from a friend.. this girl Brittany came to my school when i was in 6th grade... and she brought a magazine called Animerica. I read it and I just loved the look of the people.. so i asked Brittany if she had any more of this stuff. thats when i was told it was called anime.... I watched one of her shows called 3x3 eyes.. and then i became in love with anime.. ^^ and ever since then i cant stop watching or reading about it...

For me, it was two younger brothers and a lot of Pokemon.

Then a great friend, and Fushigi Yuugi, but that was much later.

My sister was introduced to anime by a friend. Then my sister introduced anime to me. (It was Fushigi Yuugi by the way, so yeah, I'm that "great friend." :anime: )

Well, I grew up watching shows like Maple Town, Transformers (when I could get it), Mysterious Cities of Gold (again, when I could get it), and other shows along that vein. Never really crossed my mind that they were anything other than fun cartoons with interesting characters.

I know I saw a few episodes of Sailor Moon when I was in junior high/high school, but again I didn't really think much of it. The thing that really got me into anime was Slayers. Well, that combined with a bunch of friends who liked anime and manga. *chuckle*

It just sort of spread from there. I'd borrow things from people, watch them, borrow more stuff.... Then I got to college, discovered the wonders of digital fansubs, and yeah. That's also when I really got into manga.

My theory is that japanese animation goes in a sequence if have noticed..of course you have! Then compare that to americas cartoons. Which sounds more appealing? Well, to me my answer is japanese animation. I dont like how it always starts a problem, then ends a problem all in one stupid episode! I dont know why, but it bugs me. So. Meh. I couldnt really tell you why everyone else likes it. i guess everyone just has the same opinions on things. @.@
