Well, there's a thread on this already, but I figured a new one would bring renewed interest in the series.

In any case, AD Vision has released the Region 1 versions of Azumanga Daioh. This is basically a comedy about high school, and more particularly, a group of 7 girls and their 2 homeroom teachers going through high school.

Not to be confused at ALL with drama (because, y'know, High School Drama), it's more of the silly situations the girls get themselves into.

From talking about "ji" to crazy black cats, they go through EVERYTHING together.

However, a slight downside is that I've noticed one small scene cut from the US release. Considering the series, it wasn't a BIG cut, but it is, in a way. Most of the story gets told in 5 minute snippets, so cutting out a small part of even one of them, is rather drastic. Though I can admit to knowing WHY they'd cut that part out, with "teacher" and "paedophiliac" being noncongruent, even as a joke, in America.

The English acting is actually rather decent, with Yukari-sensei being the best one. Her english voice actor does a great job of switching moods quickly, as Yukari-sensei is wont to do. From sweet and NEARLY intelligent sounding, to completely insane, she does it great. Chiyo's VA, though, leaves much to be desired. Apparently in an effort to sound completely like the japanese seiyuu, she comes off as trying too hard. And, the "cute" voice doesn't work well with english.

Kasuga "Osaka" Ayumu's accent was dubbed in a "southern belle's" voice. Supposedly this is in accordance to US Geography compared to Japan's Geography of where the Kansai region is located. Oddly, the southern accent and her spaced out face makes her seem more..."Osaka", but still, nothing beats the original.

Whoever liked DiGi Charat, or any other inane shows, I truly do suggest this. Even after watching it once, you can just pick up any part of any chapter, and start watching (or reading, if you have the manga) and laugh.

I really wasn't expecting much out of the dub, but it came as a pleasant surprise when I find a wholly listenable--if not amazing-- set of English voices. The obvious problems lie in the slightly irritating Texan accent given to Osaka and how blatantly obvious it is that Chiyo is being played by an adult female, but it's nothing sickening enough to make it unwatchable(if you want to see an unwatchable dub, check out the Escaflowne dub. It's terrible.)

I get a little disappointed looking at the construction of the box, as I usually do when I see an ADV box... but I'll probably end up getting it anyway for the lapel pins.

Box construction? I don't understand how that's really such a relevant thing; if it were in a box that said "CLOWNPUNCH HURRAY" it would still have Azu on this inside.

Yeah, the quality isn't all it's supposed to be. The Rah box was really disappointing, because it feels as if it'll break apart really easily.

Then, there's the fact that the pins pushed into the DVD, so there's little wrinkles. I'd prefer no wrinkles, but, hey...can't win 'em all.

Why care about tha box: If you are really cynical about it, the box is the only thing you are really buying, as you have the show already as a divx ;) If the box sucks, why bother? For the dub? LOL! Well OK, pins are cool.

Allow me to say again that this show is cool. Some other thread has my reasons for agreeing with those who compare it to Seinfeld. Search it out if you care. (keywords: Azumanga, Seinfeld. Author: MamiyaOtaru. should do it.)

OK, how about: if I did let myself get sucked into buying Region 1, I would maybe pay more (cause the box is more, like $10 usually) for the pins but not for a box that's flimsy. I just like sturdy boxes.

As for the divx's, well maybe... for a sub track that doesn't cuss as badly? (Well, not sure I can count on that from ADV). But what am I saying? I can get the sub script from ScriptClub, edit it how I like, sync it to my Region 2's... problem solved!

Would I be considering buying it a second time (Region2 first then region1) if it wasn't cool? Gotta check out the thread you referred to, tho...

Edit: Oh, now I remember! The Elitist Thread. Good memories.
