Anyone else here do air guitar or air drums when no one is looking?
Only really during guitar solos, drum solos or cool drum fills.

    Anyone else this sad?

unfortunately i find air guitar to be one of the most annoying things ever. but air drums are alright, and i suppose they have to be cause im guilty of busting out the old invisable drum set from time to time.. hehe

Yeah I air drum a lot.
You can hear my "air" double bass in the room below me.
Until my legs get tired that is.
I don't know how those death metal drummers do it.

so do i! i agree, its very hard, but it damn worth it.. ive grown so acustom to double pedals that bands that only use one seem like slackers.. hehe..

Yeah I'm a huge double bass fan.
When I can afford one I'm gonna buy one myself.

Most people think that they can only be used in the heavy stuff.
But prog bands make great use of it.

yeah. a double pedal can add so much more demention to the sound of a song.. not just in the raw brutal way most people think of it, but you can keep a lot of beats on it, and expand the sound in an artistic way.. ive seen it done, and it takes alot of skill. i would totally play drums.. if i werent totally hung you on a synthesizer.. which i cant yet afford so it air keyboard for me.. ima pro at this point..

heheh, I did air keyboard for the first time ever the other day.
I was working in the shop, no one was around and that cool keyboard solo on Dream Theater's A Change of Seasons came on.

    One thing though.
When doing air instuments is it common to close or squint your eyes and make strange shapes with your mouth?

i suppose only if the song is worthy. but i prefer the squint and bitting the lip method, to the stranges expressions.. like mothing 'oh yeah' is gettiong a bit too into it, and at that point youre a bigger dork than you were to begin with.. unless youre singing along.. than that perfectly alright.. haha

dream theater.. hmm.. i heard them once, didnt like them, maybe cause i was expecting a different sound.. eh, oh well..

Yeah I do the bite lip thing too most of the time.
    Or the clenching teeth thing.
I don't recall ever mouthing "oh yeah" unless I want to imitate Steve Vai or something.

Dream Theater are an awesome band. Their drummer Mike Portnoy is amazing. He is definatly one of the best drummers around.
They're one of the bands where you can say that all of them are incredibley talented musicians.

i wasnt accusing you of the 'oh yeah' thing, i have just seen it more time than i would have liked to.. especial when guys get into the air guitar.. i guess what really bothers me about air guitar is when there is no music.. and so the person will make the the noises with their mouth.. all 'jun-jun-jun..'
my hate of air guitar, another reason why i cant stand the bill and ted movies..

    heheh, Bill and Ted
    Excellent.
Man I haven't seen those movies in ages.
They popularised the stoner rocker thing. I thought they were great.
But I started saying "dude" long before they did.

That's the great thing about it!
It's so cheesy. You can make all the silly shapes with your mouth and all.
Even launch yourself off the couch, onto you knees and lean back as far as you can go.
All the cliches. That's why I love that movie.

You must ebrace the air guitar.
Next time you hear a great guitar solo, give it a go.
    And you'll never look back.

Well, to inject some new blood into this thread. Yeah, I suppose I do play air instruments, mostly guitar and bass. I play drums as well, but I usualy just end up playing on them on the guitar. I also do the wierd faces. But I often just do it with my hands in my coat pockets if I'm in public, to avoid looking like a complete bufoon. Dream Theatre are a good band from what I've heard of them, they're playing in dublin soon too. I'd go if I could afford it.

Did you know that the Air Guitar is possibly a phalic symbol???

    :p
