Has anyone seen Akihabara Dennougumi (Cyberteam in Akihabara)? There aren't too many reviews of it around, but it's a title I think is very good.

One reviewer really didn't like it because he/she felt it was too "fanservice-y." It does have some, but in my opinion it's not as heavy-handed as what flies on anime series today. The first couple of volumes are episodic so it can be hard to get into, but definitely by the midway point it is worth it.

The character designs are by the same person who did Saber Marionette J and Knights of Lamune. The premise: a fad has swept kids in Tokyo. Everyone is wild about Pata-P, cute little customizable pets. Hibari Hanakoganei has dreamed of owning a Pata-P, and mysteriously one comes to her on a beam of light, from her "prince." However, this sets off a chain of events that causes her to be targeted by a strange enemy. It appears there's a deeper purpose to the toys...

For a mahou shoujo title, there is a good amount of depth to the plot as the series advances. It's also interesting that the power at work is based in science, not magic per se. I think it's one of the best mahou shoujo titles I've seen (even despite the gonzo fanservice provided occasionally by the villains); it has very touching moments.

It's available through Sachi Gumi, and there's a separate theatrical feature (I've never seen it) available through another fansub distro.

This is the first I've heard of it, so I did a little search.

(Okay, so the mention of Tsukasa Kotobuki's hand at character design was the main draw... :p)

A couple of positive reviews came back, neither were the one you didn't like for the "fanservice-y" portion - one mentioned the "mandatory transformation scenes", but that's a given in magical girl shows. The magical girl premise isn't generally a big draw for me (then again, I might be kidding myself, finding Sailor Moon and Pretty Sammy entertaining), but the supposedly deep plot and the one reviewer's comment that "a few isolated episodes will make no sense to the viewer" shows that it might excel in the way of continuity - which I do like.

It will be a title I'll tack on to my "must see at some point" list. Thanks for dropping the title, spook.

i gues it's ok, the story is somehow different, and the action scenes are good, and most importantly, its funny:D
one thing i dont like are those chicks with the huge boobs, they look really stupid with those beachballs in their chest:eek:

    what is fanservice?

Exactly as it sounds. Gratuitous scenes and shots deliberately added "for the fans".

It originally meant things as general as Giant Mecha, explosions, or flashy poses, but it's come to be more recognized as things more of an ecchi twist like "panty, chest, or behind shots" and nudity. To some degree, those "Chicks with the beachballs" are fanservice in themselves.

    Hehehe...

Yes, the three villain women have extremely large assets. My friend showed the first episode at the college anime club, and they rejected it based on this scene:

Hibari (our plucky main character) is taking a shortcut through an alleyway, when her face suddenly gets lodged between two objects sticking out of the shadows. After she dislodges herself from between them, a very strange looking masked woman (who the breasts belonged to) gives a speech and kind of... fondles her own chest. I think the series directors were trying to establish a lasting impression!

Well, the rest of fanservice from the series that I can remember is no where near as... direct. It's more like the usual panty-shots and hot-springs mayhem. Like I said, there's some episodic ho-hum stuff in the first third of the timeline.

Here's a link to a site that has the OP in a video file:

Oh and below is a picture of the aforementioned Death Falcon.

well, then this anime is fanservice loaded, is sick, why? 'cause the girls are like 13 or something, and there are a lot of pantyshots, and theres this perverted old man(like always) after them, and the nudie transformation secuence:rolleyes:

Well, I do agree that 13 or 14 year old girl's panty shots aren't my cup of tea... Japan sure has different standards of decency regarding age than we do.

I still don't think it's enough reason to avoid the show. So what if every now and then, the old man announces his presence by flipping up the back of Hibari's skirt? ^_^;; It's just a gag; similar to Master Roshi's antics on Dragonball. I've seen much more offensive stuff (ep. 1 of G-ON Riders..Ick!)

To change the subject, I just found out that Tsukasa Kotobuki is going to be at Otakon! yay! Hopefully I'll be able to get an autograph...

    Hey guys,

Just to let you know, ADV announced that they got the rights to Akihabara Dennougumi (I'm pretty sure it will be called Cyber Team in Akihabara). A U.S. release is definitely welcome by me. The DVD version will look and sound better than those VHS fansubs!

My only concern is that ADV might sit on the rights for a long time, since CTIA isn't exactly a Hot! Must-See! buzz title. Also, I hope they won't use hard subs and overlays. I would have liked to see Pioneer handle this show, but hey, I'm just glad it's getting released!
