Awesome movie in its own right. But the mangas are even better, by quite a large margin. If the movie was split into two or three 2-2.5 hour parts it would be more accurate to the books.

I also didn't like how the movie changes some of the characters personalities. For example, the girl that Takeda (he's the main guy right? tetsuo's friend?) likes doesn't like him in the movie, but in the book they end up being together at the end.

The general/colonel is a good interpretation of the book. However, the old magic lady is hardly in the movie and her whole cult isn't even really mentioned at all. Also, the Americans never show up or try to kill anyone and that's really too bad.

Overall though, the movie is still dope. Maybe they'll redo it some day.

I didn't like it at all. If I want to see violence I'd rather go to read Blade Of The Immortal.

what's the point of creating a feature movie that follows the manga exactly, that'd be pointless. why not just read the manga?.
it's got plenty alright, but it aint just a brain candy action flick. maybe you missed it's point?....;) .

    The Point of Akira (SPOILERS)

I thought the whole point of Akira was that power isn't everything, and that it's not always a good thing to be powerful. That's just my two cents though, I know everyone will have different opinions on this. :)

    ********Spoiler Space Begins***********************

All through the movie and the manga, people are getting killed in all kinds of violent ways, but look at who it mostly consists of. Either the American army, the Japanese forces, or people that Tetsuo isn't too fond of are usually the ones getting offed. The people who have all that firepower are just pointlessly killing each other over something powerful (in the manga, as far as I've read, control of/capture of Akira and the psychic kids, in the movie, just getting Tetsuo under control and the psychic kids, pretty much). Tetsuo's got a lot of power and he thinks that's a good thing, but it causes a lot of problems, especially at the end of the movie. He can't do a whole lot about becoming some gigantic blob even though he had a lot of power; he just ends up being a frightened and helpless kid when it happens.

So the point was to tell people watching Akira that power is useless if you don't use it properly? That is moral of Akira for me. That does not make the movie any better, but it is just my opinion. I know that there is plenty of people who like it. If they like it it is fine with me. That does not make me to like it.

close. it's really about science and the destructive nature of humanity. The executive board tried to harness nature and channel it into something they could manipulate, but it backfired. it questions where we are heading with our scientific research. don't forget they tried this once and failed. with the kid Akira. although it was catastrophic, they tried again. This is a reference to that fact that although humans 'study' histroy, we really don't seem to be learning much from it.
Akira starts off with the mushroom cloud over tokyo, when Akira looses control. a reference to Hiroshima?.
The two test subjects, Akira and Tetsou, i think represent world wars 1 and 2. we learnt nothing from the first war, and then went off and had another one. just like in akira with the test subjects. nuclear fission and fussion are both essentially learning how to harness incredible amounts of energy. it's effects can be devestating, but scientist ignore that and try to achieve it for all it's positive aspects. It doesn't seem to matter to them what the price of failure is.
The scientist in Akira, (sorry forget his name), is analysing data right up to his death.

this is what i see to be the main point of akira. there have been books written on it, but i haven't seen them. this is just what i see in the film.

Understood. That description made me understand the movie a bit better. Still I prefer movies you can understand easily.

I have nothing against violence. Violence is cool and all if it is used properly. I just think that violence of Akira was totally un-important.

to quote se7en, these days you can't just tap someone on the shoulder if you want to get their attention. You have to smash them over the head. then you'll realise you have their undivided attention.
without the violence and death in akira, the film would no power.
the film points out where we are going wrong and have gone wrong. that is, how we use other people as insignificant tools to achieve our own ends. people suffereing for 'the greater good' so to speak. death and murder have always been some of the strongest issues of life.
a film with unnessecary violence is generally easy to spot, because it it dwells in the present only. it shows the violence, but not the concequences/aftermath. if you think of all the big action flicks with huge body-counts you'll realise that you can't put a name/face or emotion on any of the deaths. Yet with Akira, you can put an emotion to all of them, from Tetsuo to the pub keeper. that's because they have been killed in the film for a reason.

I have to admit that you sure have a point. The violence of Akira is heart of the movie. Akira tells about how power will be used wrogfully and it leads to violence and death insted of glory.

If I recall correctly it was 6:00 AM when I watched Akira. I was probably too tired to understand the meaning of it. Still I prefer movies that are violent but are not based on violence.

But now after reading explanations of you people I thought a bit higher about Akira. It is not that bad after all.
