ok i was watching king of the hill the other day and they layed into soccer for being a girly game....

It seems that all americans know that what they call soccer is known elsewhere as football

But i've never heard an american call american football rugby for wimps

let's face it american football is rugby (or rygbi yn gymreag (rugby in welsh)) but with armour.

I've been meaning to ask for a while but is there any difference between american football and rugby other than the padding?

I've only watched Rugby a few times, but here are my observations.

American football has a lot more strategy than rugby does. Rugby probably does have plays and tactics, but not on the scale that American football has. Also, I don't think that Rugby has someone who acts like a quarterback (someone in charge on the field I mean).

As for the padding, there is one good reason for it. I don't know what the injury rate is amongst Rugby players, but I can't imagine a game were somebody doesn't get really banged up. For American franchises, the "armor" serves to keep the players on the field and off the table (athletic trainer tables). Plus, if it was fairly easy to injure someone, a team might make it a priority to purposly take out a key player from a rival team.

Besides, it's not like the padding prevents injury that well anyways. Our high school athletic trainer was always swamped with players who were all beaten and brused from a previous game.

I'm not to sure about the differences myself, but i think that American football does have a lot more tactic's and plays then rugby.
Rugby seems a bit more aggressive then it's american counterpart but i haven't really seen that many people injuried during a game, cause the rules are very strict. I think most people gear for a players safty when they're on the ground, however i think one of the most basic rules is that when a player is brough down to the ground he has to pass the ball to a team mate, and since the opposition know this they will try and find somebody he is most likle to pass it to and try and go for them. There are very strict rules about stamping on an opponante when they're on the ground so i think that helps reduse injury.

Rugby is a lot rougher than Football, with less equipment and very different rules. The balls aren't exactly the same either, and though I can't say I've played Rugby very often, I think I prefer football. Safer.

Rugby is almost played like a free-for-all. You have to be very tough and very coordinated and very observative. There are "tactics", because thinking on the fly is all you can REALLY do, since there's no real dead-time.

American Football, however, has set people doing set things. Mostly. Defensive Linesmen are at the front line, trying to tackle the quaterback. Cornerbacks generally keep tabs at the outer edges of the field in zone. Wide Receivers are generally used to block. Etc. In that, there's lots of inherent strategy. Running up the middle only gains you a few yards, but it kinda helps your passing game, so you run, then you pass. Passing to the outside is risky because interceptions are easier to grab unless you overthrow, but it's easier to run in the side of the field than the middle...etc. There's more "strategy"...plays made specifically for things.

At least, that's the way I see it.

right got it and fair enough about the armour, the majority of the time that i see football it tends to be younger players than in rugby - they dont want to play a game that could cripple them i guess (wusses)

Essentially the rules are the same though right?

I mean the only reason football seems to have more stategy is because rugby is so violent?

ok anyway thanks for clearing it up for me.
