Just wondering who here, if anyone, speaks Irish.
The second thread I started about languages today, man am I bored.
And in case you're wondering, I do speak(alright) Irish. Otherwise, why would I start the topic? Don't answer that. Unless you really want to. Then it'd be okay. I guess.

Hmm. I wouldn't have put it as bluntly as that but I don't have any intention of further studying the Irish language.
It's funny that I don't like it now actually. When I started school at the age of eight(wouldn't you like to knwo why) by request of my parents I wasn't taught Irish(again I won't go into that). After two years without studying Irish in primary school and after much pleading on my part I started studying it and I liked it as I do many languages. What turned me off it must have been the way they tried to drill it into your head though I don't exactly remeber when or what caused it. The teachers never gave any of the students any reason to want to learn it. As far as most teachers were concerned you were going to learn and they were going to teach, so you'd better sit there and take it. Definately not a good way to encourage you to want to know more about your countries language and culture.

It's a shame that the language is destined to die out but it's fate was sealed by the poor handling, by the government, of the Irish language early in the states history. They did what they did with the best of intentions I'm sure but they did all arseways.
If you were to take Spain as an exemple as would be easily understandable to some here. The way the coexistence of the regional languages with castellano is treated by the authorities and people you can easily see where the Irish went wrong. They do it because they love it and they see it as part of who they are. The early government here just didnt create that kind of feeling within the population and so it became merely a burden placed upon people.

Alot of that might not make sense but I'm not writing a thesis on the Irish language here. I'm tired too.....

    Not a word!

I speak many languages actually, spanish, italian, french, some portuguese and learning japanese (very very green on that one though).

Still, as much as I love languages, Irish is really not my thing. don't get this as an insult, but it sounds like Klingon to me. Be honest though, like if you wanna say that spanish sounds like someone is just making up bulshit as they go! Because most of us are :D
