I've seen Jesus Christ Superstar and The Phantom of the Opera. Both masterpieces. JCSS is one of the coolest plays ever made, and one of my favourite movies. And of course Phantom is what got me into acting, music and live theatre in the first place.

Jesus Christ Superstar is, simply put, about Jesus. It starts somewhere in the middle of the Gospels, and goes up to the end. Unlike a lot of other movies, it actually doesn't make Judas look like some kind of demon. He is rationalized a bit, and Jesus actually acts like a normal person would, not like some kind of all-powerful being of some kind.
Judas and Jesus are the two main characters, but Mary Magdalene also plays a huge role. The Pharasees are big as well, and have some really fun songs. Appearances are made by Pilate, King Herrod, and the Apostles, of course.
I've seen the play performed live once, and I own the DVD (which I've watched something like 8 times since I got it last Christmas). I also have the soundtrack (which is funny, because Alice Cooper plays King Herrod). The movie has fun little anachronisms everywhere, like a symbolic scene where Judas runs from oncoming tanks, and Roman soldiers carrying machine guns.
The best part, though, is the music. It's rock-opera, and songs like Judas' Heaven On Their Minds and Damned For All Time, or the other classic, Simon Zealots, plus the main theme ... you'll be singing along for weeks. At least, that's what happened to me the first time I saw it.
It was a very controversial movie when it first came out. The guy who plays Judas is black, so a lot of people were yelling about racism. They didn't realize that Judas is the most demanding role in the script, so he actually got the part because he was the best actor and singer. Also, a lot of Christians didn't like the way Judas' mentality is rationalized in parts, or the way Jesus is portrayed. The play and movie have both won tons of awards though.

By the way, he did write Joseph.
