I've been playing around with the idea for creating a set of Fan-art Tarot cards based on the Universal Waite deck. The problem was that I could not think of what characters to fit all the cards. This isn't much of a surprise since there is 56 cards in the minor arcana and 22 cards for the major totaling to 78 cards in all. For those who don't know, the minor arcana is the part where normal trading cards are based on while the major arcana has all those name cards like love, death, the sun, etc. I just need help on the major Arcana for now. Here is a list of what I got so far for that group. I tried to keep it to one card per series but it was too difficult with what I know. Please change or modify any cards you may disagree with.

edit: If anyone wants to turn this into a contest, I'll be more than willing to take up the challenge. Everyone needs a little motivation to finsh something like this. :)

That sounds like a friggin awesome idea. I want a set.

    Now, for some help...

Justice: I really don't know what this card looks like anyway. Can't help you there.

Hanging Man: Your idea is great for it.

    Temperance: See "Justice".

The Star: Hmm... Priss sounds like a good idea here, too, but I'm sure there's something better...

Well, I guess I wasn't of any help whatsoever. Sorry! This is a good idea, though, so go for it!

Aww, you beat me to it. For years, I wanted to make my own, anime style tarot deck. Of course, mine would be with all original characters. Anyway, it's nice to see someone taking initiative.

So far your character selections seem to be a lil bit on the comedic side. Is that what you intended? (Otherwise you would have put someone really powerful for Strength, like super saiyajin level 4 Goku or Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star.)

I went  when you put Ruri for High Priestess. I mean, there are lots of good witch and sorceress figures in anime, but you put Ruri? I guess that's when I figured that you were just being humorous rather than even semi-serious about the deck.

For Temperance, my deck shows him calmly looking at his reflection in a pool, as if "reflecting" upon his actions. You could have a character who is known for thinking a lot.

Justice is a powerful figure, usually involving a great set of balancing scales (the "scales of justice" as they say). I don't know enough anime series for this one. Put someone "powerful" but not muscular, like a captain character.

The Star is my favorite, probably cuz it's my favorite number, and in my deck, my sign is also associated with this card. (And it's in my favorite color scheme.) Kinda funny that you made a pun out of it, and put a celebrity as a "star."

Edit: Kamui, you got some really good suggestions!

Thanks for the responses. I've been using tarot cards as practice for my drawing for a while. I made it up to Chariot so far in terms of original renditions until I hit the idea for fan art.

The comedic focus of this one wasn't so much intentinal as unavoidable. Out of all the anime I watch, at least 85% of it is at least somewhat comedic in nature. To be honest, I wanted to make the beginning and end somewhat lighthearted with the middle somewhat dark. With what I know, it didn't work out that way. :(

As for Ruri, there are a number of reasons for me putting her as High Priestess. She is one of my favorite characters, I originally practiced drawing female characters by copying from Nadesico, she fit the card's meanings fairly well, and in one of my art books, the pose of her superimposed on top of an image of the Nadesico reminded me of the High Priestess.

Here are a few alternates that I had as well as a few inspired by a few reminders that I've watched more than just comedies. As you can see, I took a long while for me to think about this stuff.

edit: If anyone wants to turn this into a contest, I'll be more than willing to take up the challenge. Everyone needs a little motivation to finsh something like this. :)

Speaking of Hitomi (Vision of Escaflowne), she also had her own deck of tarot cards remember? It was cool that when she was magically brought to Gaea, she was the one who brought mysticism.

Thanks seraphinx for the reminder about Hitomi's deck. Though I didn't really consider it at the time, it would be interesting to create a varient deck. The dragon is a subject I am particularly interested in. The question now is, should I stick with the standard or make additions to the Major Arcana.

Also, thanks Kamui for taking the time to give some definitions for the cards. It helped me figure out some of the characters you chose. There were a lot of differences between interpretations, though. There were also a few of your choices that I have never seen before. I don't watch very much Miyazaki stuff.:shy3:

Finally, though this is more than a little early since it would take me at least a month to even come close to finishing the outlines for the Major arcana, how should I do the minor arcana? A friend suggested that I do each suite as one anime series. Should I do that and if so, which ones?

In any case, I'm starting production today. I wonder if I'll be able to sell this thing. :D

    Cups (Water) - Cowboy Bebop
    Swords (Air) - Trigun
    Disks/ Pentacles (Earth) - Inuyasha

    Five
    Six
    Seven
    Eight
    Nine
    Ten
    Page
    Knight
    Queen
    King

Just to let you know... and also, after completing it... you techinicly could tell fortune with them if you knew what each card ment... but i wouldnt... 1) its demonic 2) You will be wastin a **** load of ink.

Edit: Here are two designs i have made... i think i will make an entire deck with the list i gave for Major and the list i gave for minor.

I love Tarot cards. They're only demonic to the eyes of a Christain really... --
And they were used to tell the future. They're like witchcraft. And witchcraft is always labeled as bad...
Ya know, there's an Utena one out of there too X) hehe, has the, most beautiful art...
and a tip try not to use more than one character from each anime. I wouldn't advise it, try to have as many from various animes as possible.

    My input:

The High Priestress: Juri Arisugawa from Utena.
Why?: One, she's this card in the Utena set (and has the best picture XD). And for good reason. The Priestress card doens't mean you look all over the country side, it means you stay planted in one place, but also you are a great thinker, always thinking and wondering of a greater meaning. Amnd you are very skilled, entitling you to many opportinuties. That's what the Priestress means to me, and i believe I'm right. :) Anyways, Juri is all of those. Even when Shiori left she didn't go after her, and she is very distant from othrs, not even tkaing the time to reach out and make some friends. That empazizes the staying still bit. She is always wondering of a greater menaing to life, love, friendship, the whole sort, and she isprobably the most sklled in the whole show. :)

The Empress: Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon
Why?: She is just so caring, putting others ahead of herself....she just fits the role...

The Hermit: Chichiri from Fushigi Yuugi
Why?: Chichiri has been in search of a greater meaning since his best friend died and his fiancee left him. He's a monk, and monk fit that first bit well. Also, he's been a hermitt for years, he has no greedy desires or any of the sort... Though his appaearance suits the fool more XD

The Chariot: (mutering: damn, people are gonna kill me for this...) Seto Kaiba from Yu-Gi-OH
Why?: I was tryign to decide if he fits the strength or the chariot more. Heck, even I wasn't obsessed with him, I would still put him down for one of those two. Kaiba is the most detrmined character I have ever seen really, he controls his emotions very well, and he ALWAYS reaches his goals. And sometimes... arrogance can be a sign of faith in yourself. XD

The Star: Sakura Kinomoto from CardCaptor Sakura
Why?: This just screams to me Sakura. She's so hopeful and she gives other hope too when they just look at her.

The Wheel of Fortune: Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion
Why?: This kid has so mnay important descions to mkae... and then there's all the stuff that happened in EoE and one could say they were based off his descions... X) His descions decided the fate of mankind! XD

The Moon: Aya Mikage form Ayashi no Ceres
Why?: Let's see, she's been fearing of lettign Ceres out and who she'd kill, I guess she's been decieving herself, she lets hr mind wander about her brother's safety alot, which goes hand and ahdn with beign distracted. Being distracted can also show with her feelings for Touya. XD

That's what i have so far. Excuse me, my brakin just died, once I revive it I'll be abck with more.

Hahaha! Yeah, Christian people seem to always be the ones to say something bad about things they don't understand, such as satanism, orgies, Eminem, etc. But anyways, tarot cards are not demonic/evil at all. (The Necromonicon is! Now THAT'S something not even I would mess with!) The only way that any fortune divining can be bad is that it tells you what you wished you didn't know.

For you, furryb, if you're gonna do one anime series for each suit, carefully pick a series that symbolizes the suit. For example, since Pentacles deals with material wealth, you could have a drug-lord/terrorist or treasure-hunting anime. For Wands, which deal with action/energy, use a martial arts anime, especially one that has fireballs or fire weapons. Cups deal with emotions, so you can use a drama series for this one. Swords are pretty hard, cuz they deal with mental conflicts and thinking--maybe just use an anime that has a lot of verbal battles.

I'm back. X) my brain is fine now thank you.

    The Devil: Sesshomaru from inu-Yasha.
Why?: I'm biased here. X) hehe

The Fool: Trowa Burton from Gundam Wing
Why?: WAHAHAHA, because he's in the Fool in the G.W Tarot Cards, and I think he fits the role very nicely, being dressed up in his cricus outfit!! XD XD

The Sun: Hikaru Shidou from Magical Knights RayEarth
Why?: X) just screams to me the sun, and someone else once said she's so be the sun. X)

The Lovers: keiichi Morisato and Belldandy form Aa! Megami-sama!
Why?: They love each other very much and over come many obsecles together.

Strength: Ramna saotome from ranma 1/2
Why?: Quote on Quote: When it comes to courage and strength, Ranma is second to none. No matter his opponent, he will eventually succeed and overcome all obstacles. He has faced everything from immortal Phoenix beings to princes of illusion to multi-headed, female-devouring dragons. If a competition has the words "martial arts" in it, he is more than ready to take on the challenge. There are no lengths to which he will not go in order to get rid of his Jusenkyou curse, either. He also learns techniques very quickly and shortly thereafter has complete mastery over them.
