I know that my next 2 are only subdivsions of Mecha but still Real and super real meaing that the robots have stats and can be beaten sometimes said that Mobile Suit Gundam is the very first real robot show. while super is refering to robots with ultra attacks and it is almost impossible to beat such as any mecha before gundam such as gaint robo. An other genre would be sci-fi,comedy,action,shojo,shonen,yuri,youi

with my addions to the list i think it should look like this
    -Sci-Fi
    --Mecha
    ---Real
    ---Super
    -Shojo
    --Magical Girl
    -Action
    --Sentia
    -Martial Arts
    -Shonen
    -Comedy
    -Yuri
    -Youi

Thay are totally different Super real is when every thing is set with statics and numbers everything is cut and dry with numbers and strict rules while Super robots have non of that everything is just battle, battle Super attack kinda like in more modern terms Big O which have very fluint rules.

Actually, Sentai... in most cases, isn't animated. It's mostly all tokusatsu. (basically means live action)

I understand what you mean now about super real.

Like Gundams are Super Real but Eva's arent? Dont Eva's have a class of their own?

Most Gundams are super real with the exception of G-Gundam that one can be argued that is it super. I consider it semi-real. Evas aren't techinly mech being biologic but they can be conidered robot besause some literature robots are anything that does work. The easiest place to put Eva would be action but even that is arguealbe. Eva is an enigma.

Yeah I knew they were biological which is why i wasnt sure what they were classed as.

Thanx a lot for the help though.. The reason I am doing this is because I am making an Anime Database for my website and the genres is going to be one of the important elements I want to include.

I hope to have the most complete list of genres so If anyone can help me I would be greatful.

If you're going to make a list, make it something some one who knows nothing about anime would understand. Like me.
Maybe you could please explain some of these catagories in English and without using examples that not everyone knows?

You know there's probably some site out there with all the anime genres listed. More than likely, they'll ALSO have explanations on what pertains to that particular genre.

BUT, for the sake of being a nice guy...I'll just list some explanations.

Mecha - Nearly anything with robots. Mostly large and very flashy. Examples would be: Sakura Wars, Bubblegum Crisis, Robotech/Macross, etc.

Magical Girl - This usually falls under Shoujo anime, but there's such a diversity that it can be called its own genre if it has to be. Anyway, this usually involves a girl using a transformation to become a super-heroine. Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon would be the most perfect example.

Shoujo - Can be classified as mostly "girly" anime. Not to say it's "wimpy", though. It's mostly focused on girls, to my experience. Mostly more story-lined than shounen. A good example is the already aforementioned Sailormoon and Fushigi Yuugi.

Shounen - This is more focused for the immature boys. Well, not really, but it's mostly focused ON boys. Inu-Yasha would be a DECENT example of it.

Yuri/Yaoi - Hentai. More specifically homosexual hentai. Yuri would be with females while Yaoi would be males. I don't believe they wre talking about this in PARTICULAR, as much as Shounen-ai and Shoujo-ai. Then, in that case, there would be homosexual relationships, but not showing the sex part of it.

And Sarah, before you say something yet again...the genres are sometimes in japanese, because that's probably the easiest way to describe them. All people new to anime go through what you go through, but I just think you're pushing it to more of an extreme. You've been here for a while, and you're insistence on remaining on only ONE side of the cultural barrier is kinda hindering your growth in the anime/manga areas.

Calm down!!! I don't post THAT much at all. You wanna see me post a lot you should see the 10,000 other BBS's I go to.
I never said I was opposed to the names of the genres being in Japanese. I just wanted the definitions to be that way so that I wouldn't need a translation dictionary to understand the definition of the names of the genres.
Look I am definitly not xenophobic. What do you know about me? I've just started going to this BBS and I certianly havn't posted that much, and I doubt you've read every one of them.
I am extremely interested in Japan. More then anybody I really know. I'm taking martial arts, reading text books, and I even know a few Japanese people personally. Not to mention the obivious interest I have in their artwork.
I really havn't been here long at all. Maybe 2 months. That's nothing. There as BBS's I go to that I've been to for many years. It's just that I like this one.
I certianly don't insist on staying on "one side of the cultural barrier." Did you not see my recent posts in the "Anime not from Japan" thread? They are very anti-xenophobic. I attempt to treat all cultures equally, but that requires that I try to understand them, and that won't happen if explainations arn't a little clearer.
But thanks for the definitions anyway. I wasn't going to say anything else until you started making these random accusations.

I understand.. There is so much I dont know and the only way to find out about what things mean is to read about it. Got to learn somehow and can only learn what you know about.. If ya know what I mean.

Sarah you might like this site I found while searching for Genres and definitions. It is good because theres a few new words I never even heard of :)

Sarah, I'm implying the fact that in every post I see from you, you pretty much seem to say to me, "I don't know anything, about japanese culture, so don't bother". In fact, in your previous post in the manga section, you say you don't understand most of the goings on in the cultural facia you see in the manga you read. Well, as I've said, MOST new manga have sidenotes where you can actually derive what's going on. And even then, most ANIME DVDs now come with booklets that have production notes to help most people out.

And, sorry if I sounded TOO offensive to you. But most of your posts sound the same, so *I* treat them the same. I read the same things, so expect me to answer all of them with the same point. Again, sorry.

That doesnt help your case much, Sarah

And onto topic - most have been listed, but i prefer not to categorize them into genres at all, because that gives you an immediate prejudice. I myself am 18 years old, male. Ive got full series of Chobits and soon fushigi Yuugi too. Classed as shoujo anime. Does that make me a girl? more importantly, does that make them any worse or less entertaining to a person of my description?

Granted, i like the stereotypical anime`s too, like kenshin and gundam and .hack, but y`know - just go for whatever takes your fancy.

<--- highly recommends shoujo anime Fushigi Yuugi :D

I understand what your saying immediate prejudice because I never from an opinion without watching the show I friend (Fuuma) loves X in all it's forms I only respect the show because it is quite original but I don't like it. He hates all Gundam (execept 0083 (he hasn't even seen the show all he knows about it that it is "good" animation from a wall scroll on my wall)) but he is like me with X execpt towards Gundam. Even I a diehard mech fan have terrible flaws in them some examples Gundam Wing=too agnsty, too much talking, gundams are too powerful.

How long ago did I post that? More then a week ago? I don't know where u get the idea that all my posts are the same. I could say the same about you because I only know of 2 posts of yours. I may not understand the culture in manga but that has nothing to do with if I WANT to understand it or not.
If you're talking about how I decided not to read Lone Wolf and Cub, then maybe this has nothing to do with me but more to do with your protectiveness for that manga. Besides, I'll probably change my mind about it.
How are all my posts the same? You named one post! Is there any other possible post that has been proven to be simular?
Seriously I post a lot on many boards and if I was repeting myself for everything I say and do people on those boards would have been sick of me a long time ago.
    Actually, when I say "a lot" I mean 3...which I guess ain't that much...

Righto, I think we should all just step back and count to 10 before posting in this thread again. Nobody really meant anything offensive, so lets bloody well stop the rage here before this balloons into a massive flamewar.
