Anime in NUI Maynooth

Next Monday the 10th of November 2003 see's the following:

The second movie of the Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy.

It will be on at 7.00 pm in the Science Lecture Theatre in The Callan Building in NUI Maynooth.

The Plot
In a future where Earth is being orbited by space colonies, one colony uses weapons known as Mobile Suits to declare their independence from the Earth Federation. Renaming themselves the Principality of Zeon, they start a bloody war against the Federation.

White Base, a new Federation battleship is fleeing from a Zeon attack at the colony "Side 7" which destroyed the majority of military personel. The battleship (filled with refugees) is now depending on volunteers to transport and defend the ship from the mysterious Char Aznable and his troops. Amuro Ray, a 14-year-old boy who managed to pilot the prototype Mobile Suit Gundam during the colony attack, is now the ships main line of defence.

A bit of Gundam History
Mobile Suit Gundam started off as a 43 episode TV series released in Japan in 1979. On it's original showing, the series crashed and burned. However it gained a massive following on subsequent reruns of show. In fact, it became so popular that the director decided to rerelease the TV series as a trilogy of movies in 1981.

The movie trilogy is basically the TV series (with original animation), with the majority of subplots removed. However the director also replaced quite a substantial amount of scenes with new animation and added in new scenes to the storyline. Overall roughly a third of the animation in the trilogy is brand new, but it's spread out unevenly among the movies - the final movie for example contains about 70% new footage.

Although the movies are at the end of the day only a retelling of the original Gundam storyline, to most Japanese they have a classic status at least equal to the original TV series. Most people believe that the movies are better implemented than the series - being more streamlined and dedicated to the main characters than a 43 episode series could ever achieve.
