prog rock has no exact definition, if fact some of spock's beard stuff isn't really prog rock. (mostly their later stuff just before they split). "progressive' is a term that can be added infront of any genre. ie progressive metal etc. they're essentially long songs av around 6-8 min each. but some are as long as an hour or as short as three secs! lots of these bands are eclectic too. ie they fit many genres into their set lists. this is why they're broadly termed as prog ROCK. There's useually more members in a group than most bands and synthesisers are a large part of the outfit. anyways... where'd you hear spock's beard? they arent the most well known prog rock band eva..:D

Basically it's (modern)prog if they're big in Germany and not David Hasslehoff or on the Insideout label.

nah there are some criteria for prog but I couldn't be arsed putting together a manifesto

Modern prog has a bad name cos all these tits that grew up on Nirvana and other such crap think the vocals sound silly and solos are masterbating. Yet they idolise 60/70s prog which does the same.

    However best prog band ever

yeah some prog rock can be 'musical masturbation' but these guys give it a bad name.

Sortof mentioned that they don't follow a 4 beats per bar in a song.

yeah, prog rock is infamous for odd metres ie, 7/8 9/8 and changing times. this means that bars seem to end earlier or later than expected in normal music. (think dave brubeck if u've heard any of his stuff, unsquare dance take 5 etc. )

rush r pretty dam good. they started the whole story line lyrics thing. (red battechetta is an awsome song)

Well I won't be able to describe cos I'm crap at that kinda thing.
But if you really want to know you should try and get some prog mp3s the bands that Poom-Poom listed would be a good place to start.

Also we forgot one thing that is a big favourite of prog bands
    Concept albums!

how did we forget that one.
