Anyone own a QUAD copy of a Tomita Performance?

  1. I am about to recieve my DTS 5.1 Surround Sound - CD
Encoding software. I remember someone saying that there
were some RARE recordings of Tomita on a Multitrack Reel to Reel, or
some type of QUAD Record Player that was available in the 60's.
Does anyone have one of these recordings they would be willing to
loan to me? Ideally, I would love to make a DTS version of Bermuda triangle,
or of Pictures at an Exposition. (One Idea I have is to make those chicken
and cat noises fly across the room..like from front left to right rear....
if the Quad's already do not do that....) Is anyone at all interested in this?
Are there already some recodings available in DTS-CD from Tomita?

I've got one Quadradisc (Daphnis et Chloe/Bolero) but I don't know of
anyone that has or had the equipment necessary to play it in quad.
The CD-4 (Compatible Discrete 4-channel) system required a phono
cartridge/stylus that could respond out to 45 kHz, and a special
demodulator. I understand it was rather finicky in use, too.

I never saw a 4-channel R-R tape of Tomita, but I know some exist.
    More common would be a Quad-8 (8-track) tape, but I can't imagine
finding one that would sound decent today.

RCA mixed some to Dolby Surround (2-channel matrix surround),
including Pictures, but I always thought they botched that job pretty
    badly.

Gee, that was a useless reply I guess. I've never heard Tomita in any
surround other than that which was extracted from regular stereo
recordings. I've always wondered what his Pyramid sound would be like.

In case there is anyone on this list who wants/needs CD-4 equipment,
I just saw this posted on Usenet:

Subject: OT FS: Bang & Olufsen quad phono cartridge (CD-4)
    Date: Thu, 12 Sep 2002 20:58:22 -0600

The store where I work sells new and used audio equipment. We recently
bought a B&O turntable which came with an extra quad CD-4 cartridge
complete with all documentation and packaging. I thought I would offer
it to the NG prior to putting a classified on 8THeaven and elsewhere.
This is for sale by the store, not me personally. If you are
    interested,
    respond to my work email:
8track at wcox.com (what else?). Here are the particulars:

Bang & Olufsen MMC-6000 Quadraphonic CD4 cartridge. Nude mounted
Pramanik stylus (similar to Shibata) for quadraphonic records. In box
with installation hardware, stylus pressure gauge, screwdriver, stylus
brush, full specifications and instructions, individual calibration
    data
for this particular cartridge, Bruel & Kjaer individual frequency
response trace, 1/4" mounting adapter (this cartridge plugs in
    directly
to a B&O turntable but the adapter lets you use it in a standard 1/4"
    headshell).

Truth in advertising: This cartridge HAS been used, I don't know how
much. Examination under a magnifying glass shows a little bit of
    debris
on the cantilever, none on the stylus. (I'll clean it up with Last
Stylus Cleaner before I sell it) I don't have enough magnification to
see if there's any wear on the stylus itself, but I'm guessing it
    wasn't
used much - there was a regular cartridge installed in the turntable
when we got it. You don't see many CD4 cartridges these days, so if
you're interested this might be a good deal. There is nothing missing.
We're asking $125 including UPS to anywhere in the Lower 48.

    Happy trails,
    Larry B.

  4. I see Yahoo truncated that email address. The part after the at
    was "wcox.com".

  5. Is this $125 just for the stylus or also include the turntable?
Doesn't the record player need to have a set of 4 RCA outputs for all 4 tracks?
Could you sell the B+O turntable along with CD-4 stylus Ready to go?
If not, what kind of turntable would I need for this stylus to go in?

I'm not the one selling it; that guy's email address was in the body
    of the post I forwarded.

But the price is just for the cartridge and stylus.

You do need a suitable turntable for such a system. The issue is low-
capacitance wiring which will preserve frequencies as high as 50 kHz.
Only two channels are used; the signal is matrixed in the same sort
of fashion as FM stereo. (The two main channels, which would be
played by a normal record player, contain Left Front and Left Back
summed in the Left channel and Right Front and Right Back summed in
the Right channel. Then, up around 45 kHz, is a weak carrier signal
that contains the difference information for front and back on each
    side.)

Left out of this picture so far is the fact that you also need an
outboard (inserted in the signal chain between the record player and
the amplifier) CD-4 DEMODULATOR. This receives the two outputs from
the record player and sends four signals to the amplifier (or Dolby
    encoder, if you will).

To my amazement, there are two demodulators being offered on ebay
    right now:

this ends in 4 hours and no one has bid on it!

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1379800897
going for a fairly reasonable price at the moment.
