Nearly every typical grocery store in Hawaii has an Asian foods section, and nearby would be the Asian/local snacks section. Most of them aren't worth trying (since a lot of them are generic chips or boring candy), but some are pretty formidable cures for the munchies.

What are some of your favorite Asian snacks, whether packaged or homemade? Right now I'm eating some li hing mui cherries, which are pretty addicting! Oh, and wasabi flavored cracker twists are awesome too. Shelly Senbei crackers are also popular, probably cuz they come in lil two-piece packs within the main bag.

Korean Cookies!!! Cookies, cookies, cookies, cookies, cookies, cookies, cookies, cookies, cookies, COOKIES!? Lotte is great brand of snacks from Korea. It has different type of cookies like a puff of pastry with chocolate inside. With the chocolate though... Korea uses a different flavoring that just makes you addicted. MMMMmmmmm...... goooooood...

We have a couple of stores that carry Asian foods in my area, which is really nice. Let's see...some of my favorite snacks that I've picked up....

    Yan-yan - kinda like Pocky meets Handi-snacks.
Gumi snacks - various flavors, basically gummy candy.
Flower Kiss Candy - Japanese candy with flowers on the wrappers and little fortunes too.
Pretz - again, kinda like Pocky except it isn't sweet. More like pretzel sticks.

I know there are other things that I've tried, but I'm blanking on what they are.

    Nong Shim noodles.

It's a korean food company. They make the GREATEST ramen EVER. Seaweed, hot and spicy, hot pepper, vegetable, chicken and beef are just some of the flavours. YUM.

Aside from what Shadowbard mentioned, there's also some Chinese Jello-cup type snacks that Many Lands sells. I can't recall the name (mostly 'cause I can't read it), but they're like Jello cups, only not nearly as sweet and Kool-Aid-ey, and have two layers to them with fruit-like things in them. They're really good, if dang hard to open half the time.

yes, I worship ramen. it is a high school students greatest all-nighter cram food.

    I know a really, really good snack! I made it myself... ^^;;
Most of you will think it is disgusting, but I love it. It's a pre-exam snack for me, or with I have about three of these little tasty treats with sushi.

    1. Make sticky rice (Kiara rice, sugar, rice-wine vinegar)

    2. Let chill for about 3 hours

    3. Make small balls out of sticky rice (about the size of a golf ball)

    4. Add either fresh or rehydrated seaweed, covering the radius of the ball.

    5. Pack in your lunch or whatever, with some wasabi, add wasabi to taste.

Hey that sounds good. There's also another little snack... It's the Korean style version of sushi. You put a sheet of the seaweed that's pre-dried(kim) then you layer it with seasoned rice...(seasonings are soy sauce, sesamie oil and the sesame seeds) then you add vegetable of your likings, then some meet and in the end you roll it together and slice them in sushi shapes. That's a very rough sketchy version. Hehe, but it sure sounds good.

Asian snacks are awesome. The Japanese make the best potato chips ive eaten (especially the Okonmiyaki flavoured ones) but I'm more of a gum fan so I usually check out what lotte have to offer. So far the best gum ive tried is "black black" a caffinated mint and black coffee gum. But the others are nice too. Pretz are good. Especially roast flavoured ones. In terms of snacks you can pick up in china town though, you cant beat porkbuns.
Has anyone tried "hi-soft"?its this awesome candy made from condesed milk and it comes in milk, espresso, latte and ocha flavours.

Kogarashi, I know what your talking about: several years ago those lil gelatin cups were really popular at picnics and stuff. They tasted best after freezing em (although they didn't actually freeze, I think).

Wolfwood, there's another gum that you might be interested in. It's not a snack-type gum, but a cleaning gum called "No Time"--it's supposed to clean your mouth as an alternative to toothbrushing! Oh, and I heard about Black Black from my brother, when he went to Japan a few times.

There's a series of dried/salted fruits, etc. that fall under the "crack seed" category here in Hawaii. The most popular are of the li hing mui kind, such as li hing mui plums, cherries, mango, even Gummi Bears... Li hing mui powder is also sold by itself, so people can invent their own recipes, or just sprinkle it on stuff. It has a unique, strong, sweet-n-salty taste, a lil tangy, a lil stinky (!). Most people think it's too weird a taste at first, but kids who get used to it can't get enough.

I can't think of any good Filipino snacks, except for Clover Chips and tamarind candy. Tamarind candy is made from tamarind "things" (I don't know whether to call them fruit or nuts, but they grow in pods on big trees) with the central seeds still in them. Clover Chips are light lil pieces (can't remember the main ingredient but probably flour rather than corn or potato), but the cool thing is that they're actually fortified with vitamins and minerals, so it's a beneficial snack!

Another good gum is XYLITOL, a rather sweet gum in a nice package and SWEETIE a grapefruit gum. Gotta love Lottes' catchphrase- "Yes, Chewing!"

Dried snacks are good. I like umeboshi and dried squid!
    Haw flakes are weird.

But, yeah, Ramune, or i also like soft cakes, they are really good.

Mochi. ^_^ Traditionally, they're filled with paste...but they've been filling those things up with ice cream. The vanilla ones are good too. They also come in a pretty good variety of flavors. My favorite would probably have to be Strawberry.

Hmm, let's see...asian snacks? Well, it's not really a snack, but I had some Asahi Apple Cider while I was in Japan, among other things. It just perked my interest that an alcohol company was selling Cider. ^_^

Then, there's that bottle of Pocari Sweat I have...

Not to mention the Na-chan Orange Juice...

    ^_^

Speaking of Pocari Sweat (I heard it does taste like sweat), for some reason I always order a bottle of Calpis Water with my curry at Curryhouse. It's the milky-water drink that looks like something embarassing. :sweat2: But I drink it anyway cuz I'm a nuts guy.

I don't like chewy mochi that much, and the mochi ice cream I had wasn't better. It's just mochi! With ice cream!

Arare is nice too, like Tomoe Brand Arare. It's also known as "mochi crunch" cuz it's from mochi, but modified so it's crunchy like a chip. And the outside is sweetened with shoyu (I think), so it has a taste that makes it seem more important than a mere snack.
