I think this was explained in the anime, or was it Death and Rebirth?

Well anyways the cause of the AT field is that the first three EVAs (00-02) have absorbed a human soul. Kaoru calls the AT field the sacred light of the soul, a boundary across which no creature should transgress.

The 00 has the older Dr. Akagi's soul, 01 has Yui's soul, and somehow unit 02 has part of Asuka's mother. The souls are necessary for the unit's to move also.

Hey Mamiya, could you explain psychological aspects of the AT field?

 

I know I'm not Mamiya, but I have run across some discussion of the psychological aspect of the AT Field.

I believe the term is used in connection with autism, where the AT Field is the autistic person's defense mechanism of trying to shut out the external world.

In Eva terms, I guess that would be the separation of the Self from that of the Other, and when manifest to its strongest degree it shields a person physically as well as emotionally.

its a thought provoking idea anyway...

 

From what i know about A.T. fields is explained in eps 24 when Kauro is talking to Shinji. He says that A.T. fields are the projections of our soul. That is why nothing can get through it.
