I been meaing to get a new video card seeing as how my current video card isn't up for the challenge of newer games (my framerates sagged as I played Far Cry demo) I don't have the money to buy a High end video card, so I'm at a limit of buying cards that are between the ranges of $200 - $250. Two cards came to mind and they were the R 9600XT and the FX 5900XT. I'm not sure which is a better buy, which one should I buy?

Well they are two of the best or in fact 'the' best brands out there in the market. I personally have the Radeon 9800 pro and it is shweeet! to say the least. Any game out at present rarely compel against it's might. However I am not an expert when it comes to graphic cards so I can't really compare or advise anything to you. I have heard that Radeon cards tend to be less reliable than GeForce ones, that is, they run into more problems. Now that issue does not arise with my 9800 so I'm not going against people buying Radeon card range. The best I can say is buy the one which is value for money.

Funny this question would pop up. I just purchased a replacement video card a few days back, and it happened to be the 9600XT.

In terms of factory-setting performance, the 5900XT beats the crap out of the 9600XT, and at a very comparable price - ATI's card has a bottleneck in the memory when compared to the GeForce. Check out these benchmarks.

ATI does release drivers very frequently, but it can take a lot of tweaking and/or driver swapping to get its cards to run properly for various games - a shame, since they're very nice cards. The 9600XT supposedly overclocks very nicely, though. They're the tweaker-man's line of cards. Get them set up right for the program, and they do great - but do it wrong, and you could be facing graphical tears, unexplained coloring, or even hard system crashes. At least, this is what I have learned from about a day's worth of playing with mine so far... ;)

Oh, anyone want a..."Half-Life 2" game coupon? My 9600 came with one... :p

Funny you drop that link and follow up with a NVidia selection. Those guys placed the Radeons at the top of their 2003 roundup list. ;)

huh? i dropped the link cause it's newest comparison of ALL the cards with latest drivers...
    it's true I prefer nvidia...
and if I select a benchmark nvidia is leading im baised...
if I drop a link ATI kicking arse, then I'm recognizing 9600XT pawns a 5900XT which is not true
the ease of maintainance and a BETTER record of driver stability make it a must recommend...
either ATI or nvidia, youre getting a powerhouse of a card...

And for one more angle: I wouldn't want to fark around with ATI drivers on Linux. Since linux is 4 of the options on my hexboot setup, it's gotta be nVidia.

ie: if you ever plan on trying linux, nVidia wins some points there (and nVidia finally released an official patch that supports kernel 2.6 so I don't have to patch it the drivers anymore yay!)

*edit* patch that officially supports kernel 2.6 not 2.5 lol.
