I have a few friends back home who's parents are vietnamese. They have the same problem that you have. They can understand thier parents just fine, however speaking vietnamese? Not really possible.

I suppose it's all just how you're wired. Be thankful for what you have, I can hardly speak or understand Spanish and I took 3 years of it.

It's easier to understand than it is to speak. I understand enough that I was able to be an active member of an all-spanish forum for awhile, but stick me in a place where I'd have to speak it and I'd flounder.

If it's a situation where it helps, try writing down what you have to say first, and using that. Then you only need to worry about pronunciation (which was my strong point :p)
