Beatemups, are they becoming less and less popular? They now have to compete with FPS and RPG games, and they arnt really worth how much u pay for them. Like U get all the secret charaters and thats the end? huh? They try to put mini games in but it still sucks.
All other beatumups have long gone(street fighter, mortal combat), the only two surviving are TEKKEN and Dead Or Alive. Do u thing that these games will suffer the same fate as its brothers and sisters, or will it have lots of break necking years to come?

I think they'll go the way of the side-scroller: they still exist, and every now and then new ones come out, but they're nowhere NEAR as popular as they once were.

Mortal Kombat is going to be in its fourth iteration soon. Street Fighter is finally slowing down, I hope to improve or retool the fighting engine. Well, thinking about it...*ALL* capcom's fighting games are getting mass revivals. Thanks to the MvC series and SNK is joining the bandwagon with CapcomVs.SNK. I think Capcom is also doing a LOT of work on reviving the old alpha and Super Street fighter series on GBA...which *could* count for their drop off in interest in the newer coin-op games. Look for yourself in the capcom website, they're doing a good deal of GBA and GameCube work.

Tekken is also alive because it KEEPS updating, not like Street Fighter, keeping the same engine and style until it grows bland. Dead or Alive won't die, I think. Because...it's MADE for the male genre, as long as there are hormones and advancements in rendering, DoA will do good. Though, that isn't to say I don't like DoA, it's a really fun fighting game if you go teams and know how to use the counters effectively. Ayane and Kasumi!!! This has *nothing* to do with the fact that Kasumi graces my wallpaper as we speak...:sweat2:

RPG's have always been around, but it seems like people are only starting to pay attention to them...probably because of all the pub and talk about the online FFXI. FPS is a fad, just like fighters...things will fluctuate again towards the genre if ya wait long enough.

First, I wouldn't classify Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc. as "Beat 'em ups". I'd call them "Fighters". When I think "Beat 'em ups" I think Streets of Rage (don't know what I'm talking about, go get a Genesis). But anyways. Let's take a look at the stats.

    Tekken:
    Tekken 1
    Tekken 2
    Tekken 3
    Tekken Tag Tournament
    Tekken 4

    Dead or Alive:
    Dead or Alive
    Dead or Alive 2
    Dead or Alive 2: HC
    Dead or Alive 3

    Mortal Kombat:
    Mortal Kombat
    Mortal Kombat 2
    Mortal Kombat 3
    Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
    Mortal Kombat Trilogy
    Mortal Kombat Gold
    Mortal Kombat Mythologies
    Mortal Kombat 4
    Mortal Kombat: Special Forces
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliances (soon to be)

    Street Fighter:
    Street Fighter
    Street Fighter II
    Street Fighter II Turbo
    Super Street Fighter II
    Street Fighter Alpha
    Street Fighter Alpha II
    Street Fighter Alpha III
    Street Fighter: The Movie
    Street Fighter EX
    Street Fighter EX2
    Street Fighter EX2 Plus
    Street Fighter EX3

    You get the idea...

I realize I left out some, especially in Street Fighter, just making a point. After so long, games get OLD. Once Tekken and Dead or Alive are forced to start making like "Tekken: Ultimate Super Champion Jin Versus Heihachi Edition" or "Dead or Alive: Super Extra Bouncy Version Plus", they're going straight to Hell with the other fighters. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Aye, the whole genre has been pretty much beaten to death (pun intended). As Ark pointed out, the current majority of titles are established brands each with their own dedicated fanbase. Publishers or even developers have no reason to risk breaking this trend since it makes for common business sense.

Mind you, the upcoming Soul Calibur 2 has perked my interest a bit :)
