Ahhh yes , the top of the anime food chain, Berserk.
Probably, in my humble opinion the best long length series there is out there, matched only by the kenshin OVA.
Kentaro Miura's ongoing master-piece about swordsman named Gatts. Read on ....

In the first of the series , we strangely start at the end. What you are given in episode one is actually what happens at the end of the anime series at least.
It doesn't really ruin the series or anything, probably does it more good than anything else as you slowly understand the happenings of the first episode as you carry thru the rest.
You're introduced to Gatts , a huge towering guy with a seemingly steel arm and missing his right eye, after a bar room brawl with alot of stabbing and some maiming for good measure we find out that hes after someone in that area , we don't know who just yet.

The feudal lord is told of this and is seemingly unsurprised , as if he had expected this to happen. He, however, now no longer wants the peasants or the land he rules over and along with his militia he goes about wrecking the town.

Meanwhile we get a glimpse of gatts trying to sleep in the forest and being tormented by some ghosts or demons, and finally a man with armor like a bat, who gatts refers to as griffiths.

Back in the town which is now almost completely ablaze, we get to watch a battle between the lord and gatts.
After being knocked down, the lord turns into a huge demon snake, he talks to gatts about how he expected his arrival and his distaste for humans.
Gatts uses a cannon in the metal arm to rip the lord in two , and then fires a couple of arrows into its remaining corpse as it screams for mercy.

The episode finishes with a flashback to gatts as a young mercenary about to battle a great knight in a siege, and from there, the story starts

The anime series ends quite abruptly. Basically, miura had penned and released the first 13 volumes of the manga and the anime covered that length.
Currently the manga is up to volume 24, with a new volume due out in japan soon. If you want more berserk, you can download the translated manga from http://www.thehawks.org/

Altho, its unlikely there will be a second series of the anime any time soon as work has not yet begun on it.

Yeah, Berserk is alot of fun.

Quick question about the DVD, does anyone esle own the US release, and if so, do you have little scratchy lines at the top and bottom of your screen every now and then? if got them on t dvds, i broguth the first one back thinking it was the disc, and the next one was the same, so i kept it. now im thinking that it may have been a batch...

    any insights?
