Depending on how much you know what you're doing (given your initial method, I'm gathering that's not a whole lot), you may want some help from a more experienced person. I'm the same way. I usually get my sister to help me whenever she's around.
Anyway, basically you're going to want actual hair bleach. Don't use the regular stuff; it will only cause you pain. You mix up the stuff as per the directions on the package and rub it evenly into your hair. You have to be absolutely sure that you get all the way down to the scalp or it'll look really bad. Then, you just leave it there for a while. How long depends on the bleach you're using, your hair and how light you want it. I have light brown hair, and after about 30-40 minutes I can get pretty light. If your head's not used to it, it'll burn. It's not really that bad, though. Just a bit of tingling and maybe stinging. If you look in a mirror, you can see more or less how light it is.
When you have reached the desired shade, rinse with water. I cannot stress this next point enough: COVER YOUR EYES WITH A TOWEL WHEN YOU RINSE!! If you don't, you could get bleach in your eyes and that's just nasty.
Anyway, after rinsing, there's two schools of thought:
    1. Do nothing.
    2. Wash your hair using ONLY CONDITIONER (no shampoo ... you still need water, obviously). This is the one to which I prescribe.

That's about it, though. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

I suggest you get your hair bleached at a salon. TRUST ME.
The bleach itself smells NASTY *** but a) it's worth it, and b) the results are amazing.

I myself don't have to bleach my hair, in fact, I dye it dark.

ummm... KaMe... it doesn't quite work that way, but... interesting...concept...ya see, the chemicals in the bleach (the stuff ya use in the laundry) are so incredibly harsh your hair would completely dry out and actually snap off.

I have a firsthand account of this. I did this with a small section of my hair, used laundry bleach on it, and yes, the results were kewl (I had my hair dyed dark brown at the time) but 15 minutes later the hair actually SANPPED off.
I did this when I was in grade 7 by the way.
Ever since I've gone to the salon.
I'm actually going tomorrow to update the colour in my hair.
    HA.

Read carefully: You bleach your hair very carefully.:D Sorry, had to say that. I agree with Lady Shadow-san. If you get your hair done at a salon you are much less likely to mess up. I had friend who home bleached her hair and it came out green. heehee Poor thing. She tried to dye it back it came out a strange yellow-orange. So, I would go to a salon.

How did bleach turn their hair green? The chemical process boggles the mind ...
It's kind of funny this thread emerged when it did, because on Monday I bought the stuff to bleach my hair again for the first time in like a year. It means I have to lose the beard, though :(.

People with dark hair sometimes have to color in steps. My friend had black hair and wanted an almost white blond. :p I actually had it explained to me once so I'll attempt to repeat it. The blond hair coloring didn't have enough color or lack there of, to completely bleach the hair. But you don't have that problem with light hair...

    AS FAR AS HAIR GOES.

If you steps or whatever like die your hair twice. WAIT a week or you will have green hair. -actual tip from a hair stylist

Don't bleach your hair to much it will fall out.

It all makes sense now ... I had a French teacher way back in the day who bleached her hair. She said that if it turned green she was going to shave her head.
Now, blue hair, that's a trick, because funky-coloured hair dye can be expensive. I had half a bottle at home, but it has mysteriously gone "missing" ... growl ... parents ...
Anyway, I'm thinking of keeping a small beard after I bleach, even though the colours won't match. I'm getting a pre-bleach hair cut today, so I'll probably bleach it tonight or tomorrow.

A friend of mine was taking my sister to a dance and wanted it bleached so I did, and he bleached mine. There's a picture of the result somewhere on the boards (by which I mean there is a picture of their wedding, and another of my bleached hair :D )

There's a tad less nowadays.. I blame the bleach hehe
