Okay, I have encountered a problem with Internet Explorer as of late, and I don't rightly know what to do about it.
The problem: Whenever I try to save a picture from a website, it will only save in .bmp format. This is not a serious problem in and of itself; at least I can still save pictures. The problem, however, stems from the fact that a bitmap is so ridiculously HUGE. I saved a chapter of a manga a while ago and it took close to 60 mb.
Anyway, if someone knows how to clear up this problem, please help.

I had that exact same problem. The only pictures that actually save as the right file are ones that link to somewhere else. If it's a static and unlinked picture, it'd have to save as a .bmp file. AFAIK, this came from some unknown internet software that got downloaded without my knowing. I tried looking for it, through Antivirus, and Adaware, but I couldn't find a damn thing.

As with almost all problems, I just say a complete reinstall in on the way. Besides, having a fresh system feels better. ^_^

Sorry to say, I haven't found the actual ROOT of the problem. All I can say is never download programs from the net unless you're actually in knowledge of what it does.

Oi, these things are like STD's ...
I was afraid it would come to that, but it's probably for the best that I just clear the whole system out.

Well, in all honesty, a good ol' full reformat every 2-3 months is recommended by me. ^_^

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, but with archived stuff as much as mine, I'd have to do a LOT of burning to keep my data.

Hey, this advice is coming from a guy with 15 gigs of anime in his HDD. That's not excluding the ... 180 episodes on my external one. ^_^ It's a lot to back up, yes...but that's why you use CD-RWs or just use a DVD-RW if you have the capability.

Suggesting the use of another program is a less than satisfactory way to answer a question about program x. I see it all too often.. use Gnome instead! Just get a Mac! blah.

I do agree with you about Opera though :) And great find on that MS support article. I've had said problem happen to me before. It went away after a while in the course of my regular purges. Now I know why.

    2 solutions for downloading images

    OK I use this solution.

On internet explorer, rightclick to activate "properties" on the JPG / GIF you're viewing. Grab the url, and paste it in freshdownload to download it.

If you don't want to download any external tools, edit your own html with notepad and include the URL of the picture there.

    i.e. <html><body><img src="(paste url here)"></body></html>

Save it, and open it with explorer. Then you can right-click and "save-as".

    Ta-da! :)
