Video Games Bungie gives away Marathon trilogy

Bungie Studios, the makers of Halo have decided to give away the three games in the Marathon trilogy. Marathon is an FPS they made back before Microsoft bought them, and before they began work on Halo. It was made for the Macintosh, and the middle episode was ported to the PC.

Recently, an open source project called AlephOne was started to keep Marathon playable on modern machines. It is an engine that can run on Mac, Windows or Linux. To be playable, it needs data files. Until now, unless you owned the original games, the only legal data files were those for the Marathon Infinity demo.

Now that Bungie has decided to give away Marathon, you can get the necessary data files here. Combine them with AlephOne and you can play Marathon on just about any platform you choose

This is Doom era tech, but the storytelling is classic Bungie, and is above that in Halo. Actually, though Doom era, it is a bit beyond Doom. It has lovely stuff like mouse look, and NPCs who fight on your side. Multiplayer is a blast as well. It's well worth a try!

 

Yay! This is going to be so much easier than the last time I tried to... obtain Marathon for use with AlephOne.

Just beat Marathon 2.. what a blast. It's great to see stuff that eventually made its way into Halo.. the SPNKR double barrelled rocket launcher for example. Or the hero's Mark IV armor Kill the man with the ball (a skull). Other stuff like dual wielding and cannon fodder humans helping you at are familiar too.

Favourite bit: akimbo double barrelled shotguns. Four barrels of fun!
