hey,i am kinda new to the whole manga/anime world and
i was just wondering where all you irish people buy anime things (i.e Video box sets, seasons of anime shows etc.),seeing as i don't have digital i don't have access to anime programmes on a regular basis.

So do u buy them locally or do u buy them from the net or catalogue and if so,where(as in which shop, site etc.).

And if there are good sites which can tell me alot of stuff on anime type shows.

Locally your best bet are stores likes Virgin, HMV and Forbidden Planet. They usually stock titles from the various UK anime companies (Manga Ent., AD Vision, MVM and Kiseki) as well as the odd major release (Metropolis from Columbia comes to mind).

The best place to obtain anime would be the internet. You'll need access to a credit card but you can purchase anime titles from all over Europe, the USA and of course Japan :) If your connection is fast enough, you can even consider downloading the titles for *ahem* free.

Is there any particular part of Ireland your interested in? I'm sure the other Eirtaku's could help you out regarding more localized advice.

the best place prob is the internet,

www.animediscountdvd.com is a good site for bootleg dvds, but I'd be wary of bad quality of dodgy dvds.. seeing as they are after all, bootlegs.

another good way (although I haven't tried it yet) is to buy vcds from people on ebay and the like, ask around for good people to buy from. and once you build up a nice lil anime collection yourself, you can trade with other people :)

Hey wait a second, I showed you this place!

I guess the best way to learn about anime is to watch it :)

Look through anime sites and see what anime you think you'll enjoy the most... then watch that...

    ...

Well I bought most of my stuff through ebay.co.uk. In my experience ordering something from almost any internet shop will cost you more than you can find the exact same item on ebay. Though sometimes it takes a bit of patience to get the item you want at the price you want. Another good thing is that you can pick the seller you want to buy from so you;ll know from the ratings they have received whether or not they are reliable. With online retailers, especially ones that sell bootlegs, your not always guarenteed good service. It's not necessarily that they'll take your money but a common problem is that they don't have the stuff you want in stock and you'll have to wait a month or so before they do.

And as mordeth said be wary of bootlegs, very wary. ALOT of the stuff produced by these HK bootleggers is absolute crap. The advantage they do have is that alot of shows that were never given a DVD release are given one by these HK companies. Sometimes though it will be a S/VHS rip but usually they will use an old LD source which is almost as nice as DVD. Oh and as for what makes HK bootlegs truly crap are the english subtitles. You wouldn't believe the muck they can pass for english. It's about 80/20 crap stuff good stuff. And even when they do a good job there are usually some problems, though minor, with timing and spelling.

As for buying VCDs be careful there too. If you were buying through ebay there are usually pictures of the item you are buying. So if you look carefully you should see a green circular sticker on the box with, if you can make it out, a letter in the centre. These are official VCDs, usually from Singapore. The reason you can be sure is that while Singapore isn't particularly tough on bootlegging they require that all video media must pass through the censors office and given a rating so any bootleg is quickly rooted out. I suppose it would be possible to forge one of these stickers so just make sure you buy from somebody in Singapore. The advantage of VCDs is that they are very cheap. A full 26 episode series produced in Singapore can be found for as little as $10 though more usually around $20 on ebay.

On ebay you can also find fansubs on S/VHS or more regularly VCD for little more than the price of the disks or tapes themselves. Just make sure you don't pay any more than you believe the disks or tapes to be worth. Fansubs are supposed to be circulated for free.

Another thing and be especially wary of this, Anime toys and models kits, never buy anything from asia that is sold outside Japan. There are some perfectly fine official one made outside of japan but it's just not worth the risk. Just stick to the US and Japan and I think there are some made in Europe too.

Anime music CDs are commonly to be found as bootlegs for sale. Stay away from anything that cost less than $10 - $15. You can by music cds from online stores for as little as $1.50 per CD but don't as they’re all copies and produced on bad cds. On ebay I have noticed that sellers usually make a point of mentioning that they are official CDs and have many up close pictures of the item.

Now if your looking for cheap official DVDs you have a couple of options. In asia there are alot of official anime distributors and amazingly they are not much more expensive than bootlegs. Just make sure you can play R3 though many are R0. I can point you in the direction of a few resellers if you want. Another option is if you happen to speak either French, Spanish or German(yay me!) you can be anime in Europe and it's extraordinarily cheap. A full series can cost as little 50 euro maybe even less but still not as cheap as official asian releases but hey.

If your looking to buy anime in Ireland one of the best places, as has already been said, is Forbidden Planet in Dublin. The only problem I have is that most all anime released in the UK/Ireland is dubbed and on VHS. There are alot more DVDs being released but the quality and value of these is questionable. Gundam Wing for example will cost you at least 35 euro for five eps which is fine in a UK/ US context I suppose but what really pisses me off is that some DVDs being released only include the english dub, on DVD that's just unforgivable. They also sell a whole lot of manga and merchandise and at pretty good prices too. A model of Eva Unit 01 I bought cost me about 30 euro which is about the same as it costs in japan plus they had to import the damn thing.
You'll also find anime for sale in HMV, Virgin and GAME.

Eh?, I could go on but I'm getting really tired doing all this typing so if you have any questions just reply to this, obviously, or if you have a question on a specific anime title you want to buy just e-mail me or somthing.

Aye, 'tis hard to find anime without resorting to the internet. There are only around half a dozen different anime DVDs for sale in Ireland that I've ever seen. If you have a credit card, or have access to one, then the anime world is your oyster. I think the best way for you to learn about anime is by just reading stuff on this site, and being mindful. You'll pick it up. Be sure to check out some manga too while your at it, it tends to be easier to get on line. Check out the love hina board to see about downloading it(the thread called The Manga: read it, or something). Good luck.
