here in portugal, animes and manga are still developing, and as you can see i haven't posted here yet cause i don't understand much of it. but i want to!
the only animes that are being shown here are ( correct me if they're not animes ) C.C.Sakura, monster ranch ( don't know the english name, sorry ), digimon, knight sabers, lum, ???????????doremi??????????, and there was a time when we had saber marionete ( correct the name if i'm wrong ) also.
we had the locomotion channel but it vanished, it just didn't appear anymore. can anyone explain me what can be considered an anime?

I think here we consider anything Japanese. Of course other countries have their own. To me they are not real anime. Japanese was the first. I think most of those are anime.

Big eyes, little noses, über coloured hairs, girls with gigantic bossoms - the "definition" of anime. (Notice the sarcasm)

Anime is basically a genre, and mainly based within the Japanese culture.

    Doremi ~ Doreamon ?

But yeah, most of your named titles are animes.

What is considered anime really does depend on who you ask. If you ask your average American anime fan, you'll probably get a definition of "anything animated from Japan," and this definition is the most common one. However, if you ask a Japanese person, the answer would be "anything animated" regardless of where the animation is from.

Of course, the American/Western definition seems to be expanding as Chinese and Korean animation is brought over to the United States. I think it would be safe to say that the average fan would probably consider the Chinese or Korean series as anime, if only because they did not originate in the USA.

*wry grin* I hope this isn't too confusing. Just remember that in most online communities you're fairly safe if you think of anime as stuff from Japan. I'm snobbish enough to try to use the Japanese definition more than the American one, but most fans aren't like that.

    Any other questions?

hehe... not confusing enought to confuse me... lol.
thanks, now i'm sure to say that anime isn't something especific with some strict rules applyed to them.
don't have any more questions for now, but i'll ask if anything comes up. :)

No, I can't explain you. You make no sense to me whatsoever. ;):D

HAH! Beat Neph to the punch! :D

    But seriously...

I consider anime to be, simply, animation from Japan. If it's from any other country, it's not anime. Ie. "Rugrats" wouldn't be anime.

    Quite simple, really.

I concur with Shinryu. If I were a Japanese person I'd probably call all animation anime. But I'm not, so my definition limits it to Japanese animation.
