'-chan' is used for children, girls and pets, it's a very familiar way to address someone.. I've heard a girl call her boyfriend '-chan' before...

'-kun' is a familiar way to refer to guys/boys, girls will use this one on guys a lot, guy-type friends will use it if they use a name suffix at all

    -UK

InuYasha, expand please on these! maybe I should have added the other suffixes...

Thanks guys ^_^. I was confused because I once did hear a girl addressed as -kun. Any rules for when that happens and why?

there's no real rules.. aside from social type things... but that's an entirely different realm.

    Not rules...more like guidelines...

"Kun" seems to be more of a buddy type of thing... from one person to another...

"Chan" is similar but in a more cutesy kind of way... it's more reserved for those younger than yourself, as UK said. Also, it can be sort of an affectionate titling, like "hunny-bunny" as in his other example...

    BakaMattSu, *shiver* hunny-bunny....

-chan is mostly used for females, family members, or kids a good bit younger than you.
-kun is used for male freinds, it's female equivalent is -ko but that's hardly ever used.
There are exceptions, sometimes -kun is used for girls or -chan for guys in a kind of sarcastic way as a slag, or sometimes as a term of endearment. You wouldn't genraly use either in a formal setting, you'd use the person's family name and -san, -sama, -sensei, -sempai, or whatever. Japanese etequite is very complex.

    ^_^; It's a Ponta-kun! ^_^ I dunno why they're called '-kun', though, because I've never actually seen J to X...but...

    Food for thought. ^^

What boggles me is why the mother Ponta-kun is still called Ponta-kun. And they say the name sounds cute. I don't know...

-kun *can* be used as a term of affection, depending on *how* they say it.
