Ok.. first poll of this forum, pick which style of character designs you liked better, and back up your reasons!

Myself, I preferred the Movie character designs, but the call was close, while I prefer Folken's series design over his movie design (that reminded me of David Bowie in all reality), overall, the movie appealed to the part of me that likes to see 'dirty' designs. It felt like the movie came from the 80's. All of that put together with the story premise made me feel like I was watching some thing *classic*

Well like most series done into a movie you always have the Extra edge in the movies. And Escaflowne the movie does have a lot of extra edge. And i do Like it.. But For some reason I like both just about the same.. Cause realy each style fits each story line. The Movie is More Dark and so is the designs. And the series Is more light and so the designs is more suttle.

I like both designs equally. Well, except for Folken; I much prefer his TV series design (although young Folken from the movie is cute).

I think the main reason for this would have to be the difference in feel between the series and the movie. The movie is meant to be darker, and the character designs reflect that, in part. In some ways the movie designs are truer to life (no noses fit to poke eyes out with!), but the series designs are closer to the classic fantasy story.

Of course, it's late so I'm probably not making much sense at the moment. Suffice it to say that I like both designs for different reasons.

Come on now, how can you say no to those wonderfully pokey noses? ^_^ I loved the series animation because it's different... and it has this wonderfully dark, haunting, feel to it. I LOVE it... I LOVE it...

Aside from Movie Folken, I rather prefer the movie designs, especially with Van. He just looks niftier. While Allen still looks femme, his costume is more masculine in the movie, and he also seems niftier. Millerna isn't a whiny brat in the movie, and I like the design they gave her. I like Merle's outfit better too. I also think Dilandu looks cooler.

Movie Folken needs a hacksaw taken to his hair, and a bit of a facelift. He looks better in the tv series.

The movie Allen looked a lot like Krelian from Xenogears...

I really don't prefer one over the other, they were both drawn by Nobuteru Yuuki, it's just that when the movie came around, he had a artistic style change.

The character designs being done by the same guy really surprised me when I found out (a couple years back, after I watched the series but just before I saw the movie) I do still quite like both, just as I said. Shadowbard can tell you that by the Escaflowne movie artbook I got her.

I do like both, though. ^_^ The movie has this awesome newness to it. :D But Hitomi I don't like in the movie. Dunno why. I just don't. o_0 Serena looks better in the movie, though, she's blonde now.

I liked the movie designs for Allen, Millerna, and Jajuka better... Jajuka looked more animalistic, and Millerna was just awesome. She definitely looked like a kicker of butts and a taker of names. :p

Allen does look like Krelian, doesn't he? Maybe THAT'S why I liked his movie design so much.

Otherwise, I prefer the series designs. Hitomi was adorable in the series, and I just liked Van's whole look better in the series. Not to mention that I have a fondness for pointy noses because that's how I draw noses... heh.

Well, I don't think you can really compare the two Millernas... they were completley different characters, basically.

I prefer the Series designs. Most of the character designs were weird to me in the Movie. I personily hated how Folken and Allen looked in the movie.

x3 To me, the movie felt more indepth, art wise, like the people were more real. In the series they felt like paper. xD

Of course, as I think someone might've mentioned, Animators make movies much prettier than animes, since an anime is so much work.

The movie certainly had a grittier, more real, shounen feeling to it in terms of animation. And of course, there was a lot less material to be animated, and a nice fat budget.

Still, I like the series designs too. They're very unique, and in many cases very shoujo - which I think is a nice compliment to the blended nature of the series.
