Chinese Chinese Terms/Phrases/Vocab/Slang

Knowing only Cantonese, I will refer to this in all threads in this forum. Teddz will deal with the Mandarin side to things

**As said before, these spelling for the pronounciation are not official but are customed by myself, just follow and you will be saying it near correctly.**

Next time when you stand next to Chinese person having a conversation (phone, friends or otherwise), see if you can pick out a few words/phrases:

Cantonese - [Common Hong Kong words/phrase usage]


Hai! - 'Yes'/'Ok' exactly the same meaning as the Japanese one. Except it's said in a more slower, deeper and 'lazier' tone... more like Haaaiii, as supposed to the Japanese 'quicker' verision.

Haaah? - 'What'/'Huh', Must be said like those to "Huh???"/"What??"/"Nan?!? for it to actually take effect... As supposed to the unsuprised/non-asking version of 'What'

Waaii? - 'Hello' (only on phones - Japanese 'Moshi Moshi' equivalent) Said in a similar fashion to Haaaah?

Mutt Yeah?/Mehh? - 'What?'. Only used in spoken Cantonese and not written (That being 什麼 pronounced Sum more). Mehh? is the more slang version of Mut Yeah?)

There aren't really that much slang within mandarin, not that I know of.

Mandarin

" Wei " - When you answer the phone, you often say "Wei" instead. Just like " Mushi mushi " in Japanese.

" Hao de..." - "Alright", used alot, slang wise and formalwise.

" Ai ya.." - "Oh man...", This really depends on what voice tone you use. With a dissappointing sound, it's rather "negative".

Cantonese

"Dimm Arr" - Slang for "How's it going?". Can also be used to express concern such as asking someone "How are you feeling?" when one is sick.

"Chi Sheen" - Means "you are mad/mental", but it can sometimes be referred in a ruder way.

Gao Mehh? - Slang for "What are you doing?", probably more accurate to be translated as "The hell are you doing?"
